If you want a solid bourbon to make your favorite highball, might I suggest:

Not much into Bourbon but Bullet at about $31/750 ml is ok and not disastrously expensive (and yeah, fuck Pappy's). Its a bit of a sweet aftertaste that some object to.

Four Roses is even cheaper at about $25/750 ml and is serviceable, IMO.

Old Crow....about $18/1.75 L!!!

Hell, after the first drink, who can tell! haha

Save up a couple of bucks, nothing extravagant.

Look for things like "barrel proof" or "cask strength" in whatever brands that can be had on your budget .

No its a real Bourbon from Beam its just the bottom of the barrel.

As far as Beam products if you can find Old Grand Dad 114 is way better than that Old Crow that way back was
a fine bourbon when bourbon was a poors drink.

I appreciate a good bourbon as much as the next guy, but if you’re going to mix it, it’s a solid choice. EW and Beam are probably my favorites. Like a previous poster said, sub $18 for a handle is hard to beat. That and Benchmark for bottom of the barrel poor people like me.

Count yourself lucky brother. I wish Old Crow, Ten High, etc. did not taste like rotgut ass to me.
It would save me thousands a year. Jim Beam and Coke Zero is about as low as I go.

While OGD is owned by Beam it isn't the same as Jim Beam or Old Crow (or anything else Beam makes). It is the one product they own that is it's own formula and more importantly a different yeast strain.

I've never been a fan of the funky taste Jim Beam has which is from their yeast choice. I do love OGD 100 and 114 (although it's not as good as it was ~8 years or so ago but what is).

If you are gonna mix an 80 proof you might as well be drinking your own piss.
You might want to stick with Zima if they still sell it. Maybe some Seagrams strawberry daquiris

Only bourbon I have ever thrown up was Old Crow. I was young, poor and not privy to good brown likker.....but still.....that stuff sucks.

Its not something I’ll buy or drink throughout the year but I usually keep a bottle of Woodford Reserve in my ice shack. Damn smooth stuff, makes my mouth water just thinking about it

That ain't Brandy and Old Fashions come with Brandy. At least in God's country they do. :p
I was always told Rye for old fashioned old fashions.

Old Crow was the first American whiskey sold under a brand name and was known for its quality even after prohibition.

If are interested in the history here are a few short reads:

The thing that ruined the brand:

You are correct OGD has a higher percentage of rye 27% vs 13% for pretty much everything else, not sure on the yeast as they guard that
like its gold.

Older bottles of Bookers is my favorite bourbon, it has a just right viscosity (thickness) to it.
I just picked OGD 114 because is good and CHEAP.

If can find an older one is a little less hot (likely more age) and taste best summed up by another as "the burnt corner out of a brownie pan"

EDIT:
Regarding OGD another way can prove the yeast thing is the other OGD product I omitted; Basil Hayden, it tastes nothing like any Jim Beam product. Until recently it was 8 year age stated OGD although sadly 80 proof. I still prefer 114 out of the entire line up even if it needs a splash of water now.

Congrats on your commitee selected barrel proof Jim Beam. 😛

Seriously that is exactly what it is. Jim Beam has exactly one formula for their bourbons. As I stated above OGD/Basil Hayden is the exception because it was a brand they acquired and it was historically a different formula and because of the family tie-ins they left it be.

The differences in any of the Beam products is proof, age and rackhouse positions. Stuff that was made to be aged longer will likely spend more time in cooler parts. The mashbill, water, yeast, distillation method on all of it is the same. The "named" special editions of Booker's are chosen by a small committee of Beam employees including the Noe's

ETA:
If you check the blog I linked above you can verify all of that for yourself. Cowdrey literally wrote the book on Bourbon making in America. He worked for decades in the industry and knows (or worked for) just about everyone.

When I bought my house 22 years ago, I met my neighbor, a retired Army officer.....

A graduate of the second Green Beret class.

He spent 8 years in Vietnam.........

He told me he was one of the people who went where we didn't go, and did the things we didn't do........

His wife got a visit once to let her know that he was missing, presumed dead........

He came out of the jungle 3 weeks later..........

He retired as a full bird Colonel........

Every time I would meet him in the bar, his order was a Budweiser, and a shot of Old Crow.........

RIP Bill........

Although Elmer T Lee is no longer what it was either. It was also a committee selection but Elmer was the main decider up until his death.

@Fig
If you drink TX you have got to try this

Opened my eyes to any brand of barrel proof or cask strength.

Crow is decent bourbon if you plan to add ginger or coke.

Bulleit is nasty shit regardless. I piss better than that crap.

Great bourbon to be sipped straight or with a cube or two starts with Wathens, Bookers, etc

well hell, if you're mixing it who cares?

I like mine watered to taste, and I vary from the $30 devil's cut to $80 Glenmorangie lasanta. Quite a few bourbons and scotches in between.

The most expensive bottle in my cupboard tastes like garbage to me, but my Dad enjoys it so I keep it around for his visits.

I do keep a bottle of Canadian whiskey in the cupboard for those that wish to have a mixed drink.

Dang... if your going to show up to shill bourbon on the ‘Hide, it should at least be the good stuff.

That there corn squeezings is Arf-com and Twitter “poors” hooch right there. Designed to strip the polish off Velcro sneakers!

I can already see a bunch of whack-a-doodles Tweeting out their “Go fund me” pleas for a bottle of sour grackle.

I don’t even drink bourbon and can tell that stuff is rotgut.

Sirhr

Old Crow.............That is considered the rock gut of whiskey's that my father sold in his shop. Only the hard core booze hounds bought that stuff when they were down to their last few bucks. I'd rather drink Listerine given a choice.

Maker's Mark and never look back.
