So the story….

A teacher showed this video to ( I believe 5th grade class? Could have been 6th) his class. It was at the end of the hour and there was not time to discuss any of it. He excluded slides 18-20.

The district did an investigation ( HR did a hit job on him ).

It was brought to the school board and the accused asked for a public hearing so it’s on video.

He was accused of being a racist and distributing/contributing racist views towards Asian people. He has played this video for the past 5 years.

One student ended up going home in tears and complaining to his parents. A official complain followed. A legal opinion was given to HR and given to board members.

Discussions followed in an open session. One member was pragmatic and openminded, the remaining members TOTALLY FREAKED OUT!

The vote was 4-1 in favor of firing.

This was supposed to be a leaning conservative district.

The subject was revolving around world pollution. I believe there MAY be 2 slides that apply.

If the dude was teaching an English class and in the middle of a Shakespeare lecture decided to go on a rant about China, told the students how Chinese people are evil, and then showed this video....

....thats a lot different than being in a history class, and talking about how cultures change and the influence of the govt over cultural norms and the welfare of it's citizens, then showing this video.

Frankly, if the dudes lecture was on pollution...that was a shit video to use...as pollution was barely addressed.

In my engineering classes, I slam China all the time for patent violations and lack of regard for workplace safety.

I watched the vid. The subject of whether this vid is relevant to his classroom subject is not the issue at all.

He was fired for being a "racist" and as far as I can tell there is nothing in this vid that is racist. Its about China which is a country, not a race. Its about the Chinese government in large part, which is also not a race.

Now with that all said and if I was the ever powerful OZ of the school system this is what I would do. First off the hatchet man errr woman from HR WOULD BE IMMEDIATELY FIRED! Abuse of power and incompetence. Second 4 out of 5 school board members would be removed due to incompetence and an election held to replace them.

If you really wanted to get a good solid fix, make classical education mandatory for the entire district… Eliminate the teachers unions and empower the parents. Teach both sides of a topic and promote discussion in the class….. I’m not talking yes or no replies but actual answers and have them explain how they formed that opinion.

For better or worse, teachers need to realize that they are teaching under a microscope. And, if you are going to use any 3rd party material, you better be damned sure that it is on point- to the topic of the class- and be able to validate why it was used. If this is a class/lesson about pollution, teach about pollution. Everything else is extraneous to the topic of discussion and a potential point of contention- as the teacher found. He may not be a racist, but he gave the school board the hook they used to land him. I guarantee there is more to the story.

The hr interview was most definitely a surprise. If you watched it, one of the first things they ask him is “ Do you know why you are here?” His answer was no.

He was also not allowed to interact in anyway at the board meeting nor could the members ask him any questions.
