The AR15 Picture Thread

Thanks. Any input on a setup like that? If you could do it again would you? My feeling is that most of my shooting is off a bipod or tripod, unless I am shooting a local PRS match so the extra size shouldn't matter.
The intent for this will be for hunting so I will be shooting off a bipod or tripod too. I built this in December and finally zeroed it last weekend so I don't have a lot of field experience with it. I personally don't worry about the size or weight so I don't have any regrets.

Finished another 16 inch rifle. I need to grab a better charging handle, a better trigger and kns anti rotation pins. Cerakote in burnt bronze by Lakatosh Customs LLC. The stock trigger sucks but it is less horrible with the JP springs.

New glass on the old .300 BLK. I’ve had a fixed 3x power Vortex Spitfire Prism scope on there since I built it back in the day (2012/2013…Somewhere around there 🤷🏼), and it’s been a great optic for 100 yards and in plinking around…And even 200 yard plinking at the range. But with my new subsonic handloads for it, the Rainier Arms Match-Grade (Shilen 5R blank) has really started to shine, and has proven to be SO accurate and consistent at 100 & 200 yards, that I decided it was hunt-worthy…So it needed some variable magnification…

So, I found an absolutely smoking! deal on the new Vortex Strike Eagle (Gen 2) 1-8x24 scope with the AR-BDC3 reticle (MSRP $499) AND a Vortex CM-202 mount (MSRP $149), for $329 shipped (for both) to my door! So, I snagged one! It came in today, and everything was real, authentic, and still factory-sealed with tamper-proof plastic tabs. 👍🏼

Just finished putting an Atlas and a Burris RT15 in a Warne mount on Hunter's rifle. He built it when he was 12 for 3Gun, but I took off the AR1X and made these changes for him to shoot the SAC in September, just a few weeks after he finishes Basic Combat Training at Ft. Sill.

Just got done tweaking this rifle to do matches in:

HfXzpR0.jpg

Used to be a Mk12 Mod H from PRI. After running the original config with the Leupold Mark4 side-by-side against the NF NXS 2.5-10x on my Mod 1 clone I finally decided to step out of the clone build and change things up, ended up putting a NF SHV on it. Heavily influenced by what @Trigger Monkey and @Brandon05_88 posted in the SPR/DMR matches thread.

Well, how does it compare?

Still waiting for that rocksett layer to finish curing before I test it out at the range. I'm happy with how everything fits and how stable that clubfoot is with a rear bag.
If you ever feel like trying a different stock, the BCM Mod 1 SOPMOD is a great stock for this kind of application.

Anything in particular? ARMS started making their Comp II M68 30mm carry handle optic mount again, after being out of production for a while. They were in stock a few weeks ago when I got mine.

The light is an older Surefire 6P from eBay in an Amazon mount....the prices on the 660s are ridiculous these days so I went with the 6P. Pressure pad is another eBay find, Solar Force from Hong Kong, I couldn’t find compatible tape switches from Surefire. The cord was way too long so I shortened it to around 6”. The ranger bands hold the switch and tend wiring.

Everything else is kind of hodgepodge, this started as a spare parts build and quickly spiraled out of control. Very happy with it. Haven’t shot it yet but it is nice and light compared to my other QRF builds.

@MSTN would you say the Santan is the best receiver for precision builds as well? Better than say a Vltor MUR?
Also I’m guessing you prefer JP bolt for everything?

Maybe just the camera angle but what barrel is on the A1 ? Looks mighty thick for a A1 pencil profile..? Looks thicker than a gov’t profile too? Could just be the angle tho as said..

It is a gov profile. The A1 is far from a correct clone. I built that last fall and finding parts was a hassle so it was as close as I could get with what was available. Makes me damn happy though!

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't tried them all. Here's what (I think) I do know:

For a precision UPPER, the Vltor MUR is I believe a premier choice. Best one of which I'm aware, and has been for almost 20 years. Forged - stout as can be. Not a lightweight, either. Well engineered and well executed. Barrel extensions may require a tad of Locktite, since it is designed to work with anything. Guaranteed to rattle a little on most lowers, because it is purposely designed to work with ALL uppers. If yours is tight on your lower, it's due to tolerance stacking.

SanTan takes a different approach. For a precision upper/lower receiver set, SanTan is hard to beat. Let's go tight on tolerances!!! Don't try to slap your SanTan upper on anything but a SanTan lower. Plan on a solid 30 seconds with your heat gun on high to get that Proof Research CFW barrel extension to fit. The now discontinued Young MFG National Match bolt carriers would not even fit inside the early SanTan receivers.

Another thing with SanTan - The anodizing so so good that it makes the other aluminum parts on your gun look kinda cheap.

Had an AR with a Triji 1-8, UBR, and a 13.5” NSR that wasn’t a whole lot of fun to shoot at anything but man sized or bigger steel (reticle center covered a full mil, the damn thing was hard enough to zero) - decided to turn it into a wrong handed MK12 Mod H, and it’s now a ton of fun. Lighter, handier, and 3” plates at 200 yards are easy pickings.

I’m sure LPVOs have their place in an actual tactical environment, but I forgot how much easier “aim small, miss small” is with a traditional scope and the fine reticle.
