Good morning armorpl8chikn

I appreciate all of the replies that are received. Each reply, comment and meme provides me with an opportunity to share with everyone. In the case of part 1 of this series, I know that the method that I presented is quite unconventional. But it works and it works well. I've posted Part 2 of this series. You may find it interesting.

I'd like to know your thoughts regarding this post.

I dont know if you will be releasing the info in one of the other parts but if you sight in starting at 7 yards how do you account for bullet rise. I would imagine you have some calculations for this? Also do your calculations change for each bullet type. I have done some of my own testing and the only solution is have found is the reticle in my Quigley ford scope.

Don't worry about bullet rise. Once it gets close to the ionosphere, the electron charge of the static reductance, acting on the bullet, will serve to push the bullet down toward the target.

I am assuming that you reviewed our website. Based on this assumption, I will provide the reasons that we utilize airsoft.

1. In order to provide training with a real handgun (at least in the state of Texas) you have to be licensed. Becoming a licensed firearms instructor is not the easiest thing to do. This state requirement can be circumvented by using airsoft guns.
2. Some training schools utilize Simunitions in order to provide real-time feedback in a safe environment. I have done this in the past. However, the use of Simunitions requires that you take a class which costs, you have to have insurance which is exhorbitant (IF any companies will insure your training company). These costs add up making classes not necessarily as profitable as is necessary to continue to run courses. The utilization of airsoft allows a very close result as with simunitions, or UTM, with a miniscule fraction of the cost.
3. The use of airsoft provides the student with right now, real-time feedback as to whether a TTP works or not. It's easy to say things like, "My last instructor told me to stand in the open and lay down suppressive fire no matter what." When students do this and then are engaged with airsoft (simunitions and or UTM), they learn, on their own, from the discomfort of the impacts of the training rounds, that the TTP that they're employing does not work.

The same can be said for testing and finding that one's TTP does work.

The Take Away here is that airsoft and like training munitions allow for a safer training environment where you can test your personal or team TTPs/SOPs in a safe environment.

Hi

Seeing that you are in Texas you should hit up a guy named DThomas from Hoplite Ammunition.
I'm certain that Dave could work up a load that will maximize your 7 yard zero.
Right now would probably be a good time to get him, all the stuff he's doing is computer time crunching numbers.
I'm sure he'd be grateful for some real work.

Good morning DuneBoer,

I must admit that I am unable to provide any information regarding your question. I wish I could. There are some very intelligent persons on this forum. I am sure that someone will be able to provide you with the information that you are looking for.

Before I close, if I might ask, what is your skill level and what is the tactical application that you face that leads to your question?

Thank you,

Krieger

Hi,

My skill level is actually a classified matter. The application is simple. Shooting through thick windows at different angles, glass thickness, distortion and deflection equations. I need a simple cheat sheet I can tape to my stock that works through these problems.

Sincerely,

DuneBoer

Oh come on man. Give us your call sign.
Hi

I can give you an old one that has not been in use since the early 90's "Vomiton" A Columbian cop by the name of Eduardo gave it to me after I polished off a pint of aguardiente and puked all over his Isuzu diesel. We were celebrating after surviving an armed engagement with some of Escobars boys. It was really tactical and shit but I can't go into details.

Sincerely,

My name is Leroy, I have a new radio does anyone want to talk to me?

So, to be clear, no one on your list of instructors is licensed?

Long Range Precision Marksmanship - Part 2

INTRODUCTION TO “HOLDING”

MY BACKGROUND

My call sign is Krieger. I am a former Special Forces Soldier (7th Special Forces Group, Ft. Bragg, NC), former security contractor (Baghdad, Iraq), former instructor (Department of State – High Threat Course), and current Unconventional Asset Recovery Agent.

I provide this information in the hope that it will provide a means for a marksman who is looking to improve his or her level of marksmanship and ability.

WRITTEN FOR
While advanced scopes and reticles exist, there are some personnel who still utilize the MIL dot system. This post has been written for this demographic of marksman.

POINTS OF INFORMATION
This post is written from a general assumption that anything not covered in-depth is understood by the reader. Over time I will be returning to this post and explaining many of the points that I don't cover in depth in the next two posts. If you have any questions, if there is something that I don't cover well, if I need to clarify a point or any point, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask for clarification on this thread, or DM me directly.

USE OF MIL DOTS
MIL dot reticles can be utilized to measure objects, estimate range, measure for corrections of round impacts, etc. For those who may not be familiar with the MIL dot reticle, there is one depicted in the first slide attached to this post.

FACTORS TO BE ACCOUNTED FOR IN LONG RANGE PRECISION MARKSMANSHIP
Before a marksman takes a long-range precision shot, there are several factors that need to be accounted for. For now, we’ll only address two of these factors: Windage and Elevation.

WINDAGE AND ELEVATION
-Windage is the calculated effect (left or right of the center of the target) that the marksman projects that the wind and various other factors will have on the fired round during flight.
-Elevation is the calculated deviation that the round will strike above or below the center of the target based on distance from the marksman to the target.

CALCULATING ADJUSTMENTS
The effects of windage and elevation will cause the strike of the round to deviate from center mass of the target. The marksman calculates the adjustments that need to be applied in order to bring the strike of the round back to center of the target.
There are multiple ways to make this adjustment/correction.
I will be discussing one of them; Holds for elevation.

HOLDS
Once the marksman has determined the distance to the target the marksman can utilize the Data On Previous Engagements (DOPE) that has been gathered and recorded in the marksman (sniper in military terms) log book in order to identify the MILs that must be “held” off of the center cross-hair in order to allow/bring the bullet onto the center of the target.

An example of this process is captured below in writing and in the visual aids attached to this post.
Based on a example .308 175-gr trajectory for the M118 (which I used many years ago) a marksman would apply the following MIL holds for a
100 yard zero (https://www.snipershide.com/.../specifications-for.../)

METERS: 100 MIL HOLD: 0.0 point of aim/point of impact
METERS: 200 MIL HOLD: 0.5 higher than center mass/ desired strike of the round
METERS: 300 MIL HOLD: 1.5 higher than center mass/ desired strike of the round
METERS: 400 MIL HOLD: 1.95 higher than center mass/ desired strike of the round
METERS: 500 MIL HOLD: 2.9 higher than center mass/ desired strike of the round

VISUAL EXAMPLES
Slides 2-6 provide a visual graphic of the "holds" as noted above. The center of each target is identified, as well as the location of the cross-hair as it is being held in order to demonstrate visually how each subsequent range necesitates a "higher" hold. These graphics provide you with the ability to note and understand the "holding" process described above.

To note, I created these graphics utilzing powerpoint and thus they are not 100% to scale, however I feel that they are close enough to accomplish the intent here - which is to provide the reader with the ability to visually identify the holding for elevation (range) process.

ALWAYS TRUE?
The provided calculations (holds) are not true for every instance using M118, nor for every M24 sniper weapon system, nor every caliber, nor even every instance using M118.

In fact, there are several factors that influence the hold that a marksman would need to apply. In order to know your "hold" you would have to engage a target at each range and note that in your shooter's log book.

I simply provide this information as a Segway to an introduction to “holds” and to assist in facilitating the understanding of the process.

We will utilize this information in the next post when I discuss reestablishing zero at 500 meters and why a military sniper or tactical competition marksman would do so.

TAKE AWAY
For those who wish to utilize the MIL dot reticle system, being familiar with calculating and applying holds can be an extremely efficient method to engage targets at distances. As we continue to work together in this series of posts I hope to provide you with the means to do so efficiently and effectively.

Good morning Steel head,

I appreciate your memes and what appears to be your skepticism. These memes provide a Segway for me to be able to interact with both you and the forum populace. I am truly grateful.

Hopefully, as I continue to post I might be able to allay some reservations regarding my posts and provide some worthwhile information.

Thank you

I'm thinking this is going to really effect the prices of scopes in the PX. Now we can dig out our 1990's mildot moa turret scopes and get rid of the ffp mil mil new fandangle $hit.

I agree! christmas tree reticles are soo 2021, the best bang for your buck in 2022 is a mil-dot Barska 3-9. Capped turrets too, because it's better to use the mildots for holdovers instead of getting confused with all the numbers on exposed turrets.

Nobody in this thread will convince me that this isn't someone we know with a new account. It can't be. We don't deserve, as a community, for this to be real. We aren't worthy of that.
All those Christmas prayers really paid off eh ?

7-YARD LINE
Whether I am shooting a pistol, AR style rifle, or even a "long-gun" as some in the tactical world refer to long range precision rifles, I have the exact same first few rounds process.

No matter what weapon system I'm utilizing I start at the 7 yard line and it is from this distance that I fire the first round.

Thanks a bunch you fucker. I went to the range and tried that.

The range I go to doesn't have a 7 yard line, only a 5 yard, 15 yard, 25 yard, 50, 100, 200 and on out to 1000. Since we only have a 5 yards line I had to move by shooting bench another 2 yards back from the firing line. Well, some people are a little sensitive to a .338LM with a Fat Bastard brake being fired from 2 yards behind them. They got really pissed as a matter of fact, even though I pulled up your post on my phone and showed them. The RSO came down and yelled at me and told me I can't come back for 6 months.

The firing position 2 spots to my left had three of their kids there, all three of them pissed their pants and they had to be 13 or 14 years old. The guy to my right was shooting an AR pistol brace sissy thingy and he was still twitching when I left.

I think this setback might mean I will never be operator enough. Fuck it, I might just sell off my Airsoft stuff and take up sewing or finger painting.

Man. that range officer was way outta line.
You told the guy it was like totally operator stuff you were doing, right ?
I'd hate to see anyone have to sell their operator training airsoft tools.
Totally not extreme.

The only requirement in Texas is if you want to be an LTC instructor. It’s also extremely simple to obtain.
