Lets kick off 2022!

I said last year I was going to keep track of how many hogs we got. I only remember the highlights.
So today is Hog #1 of 2022. This year I'm writing it down.
Shot with 75gr Hornady Interlock, quartering away about 40 yards. Almost perfect shot, watched her fall over in her tracks. The amount of blood coming out of the exit hole was incredible, like a hose pouring out. Never seen anything like it.

January 2, 2022 (Late Doe season)

260 Rem (Savage SA w/ Shilen SS pre-fit)
140gr Berger VLD Hunt, Lapua, H4350, @2863fps
Manners T5 and TBAC 30P-1
SWFA SS 5-20

These shots beat my previous longest shot on game by 160 yards. Lucky to have 0 wind this time of year to make the shots easier.

Are you the gentleman who posted a vid of XC skiing up some mountain(s) to kill a bird? If so, I was impressed with your level of motivation. If not, well...based on the above pic, I'm still impressed with your level of motivation. haha

So I have to ask as a waterfowl hunter (with shotguns), when you shoot a grouse with a 6.5 CM, what is left to eat?

That’s not me, but I know who you are talking about. He has a some nice videos of ptarmigan hunting, they can be found on mountains. Capercaillie and black grouse is usually found in the forest and pines on mire/morass/swamp(?).

Yes some motivation is needed to get back to the car when you have spent the day on skis, deep snow, -25c and you didn’t see a bird the entire day (very short days up here early Jan though). But I like it, it’s pretty challenging, finding the birds in particular.

It’s a lot less destruction than you might think. The Scenar bullets just pencil trough the birds unless you hit the wing knuckle, in which case it can destroy some. I keep speed moderate and don’t get so close (which is impossible anyways). Some bullets leaves nothing but a pile of feathers.

The “big” guns (223,6,6.5 and 308) are primarily used wintertime. Autumn is mostly shotgun and .22wmr depending on what dog you use.

Outstanding!

May I ask where "up here" is...generally?

haha...even with a shotgun, I have been s sometimes too anxious to let a quail get out far enough and just ended up with wings, head, and tail as all that's left! LOL I eat everything I kill (well, except the blown apart birds..sigh) so I really try to let em out a bit.

Thanks again for the reply

It is! This hunting (called “Toppjakt” in Sweden) is mostly taking place in Sweden, Finland and Norway. I live in sweden and hunt around 63-64*N and some above the arctic circle. But this hunting takes place in the “south” as well (Dalarna).

I don’t really know how big a quail is as a reference, but a big old capercaillie is “defined” as 5kg+.
But it’s depressing as shit when you end up with nothing but slush. Thankfully, I find it rare, and usually a result of bad bullet placement from my end.

No worries!

Quail are small....so when you give one a full shot of 20 ga to the chest at 10 yards, there sometimes can not be much left. We hunt quail on the flush from dogs and often its not that hard to let them out a bit as they are fairly fast out of the brush...and I'm not! haha

I did work as a Proj Mng for Ericsson in the 90's but never got to go to Sweden. I did work with a lot of Swedish people and one surprise is that I found that many of them liked really strong coffee. I just never associated that with Sweden.

We got the quail this day last year....mostly use English Pointers or GSP with either Labs or English Spaniels as flushers. I love it and am going down to Georgia in a week for a hunt with the same people. I get down there twice a year...sometimes three times. Highlight of my year (yeah, I have no life! haha)

Cheers

No pic rail just a little 4” area 419 arca rail with a leofoto leveling base
Snuck out with the new 12” 6.5 Grendel for one last late doe season hunt.
Just got this put together and haven’t got work up any reloads.
At 297 yds the Hornady Black 123gr ELDM made this fat doe DRT!

Wild Boar-took him at 20m broadside while he was running through trees. Not sure on weight, but he's pretty stout.

Young 7 month old ”Hangin’ Tree Cow Dog/Malinois Mix finding his first antler shed in the woods. Been training him on small pieces of antler hiding around the house and yards. First time out he finds half a 10 point! He’s also tracked a couple of dead pigs we’ve drug through the woods and nails it. He’ll find anything once he‘s trained up and ready.

Spent the last ten days hunting these and several more. All measuring at the top for each animal species! Lots of great hunting the past week and a half.

Unfortunately hunting will be postponed again this year. I did get some rats in Feb. with my PSS 308 Win with 168 ELDM. I used TAC, Nosler 2nds brass, and Rem 9.5 primers. 216 and 242 yards if memory serves me right.

This should be a 2021 entry. 583 yard rock chuck on a 22-250 burned out 1-14" twist. 55gr Berger Match Target going on a still charge of H380. I yarded off the barrel only to find out the threads were too large on the new barrel. Screwed it back on for the rest of the season.

Well.
Dead is dead and meat in the freezer…..

Recent trip that was fishing in the early AM, followed by about 6 hrs of of work each day around my friend’s cabin.
They are 84 and 85.

Day’s limit for my dad and I a couple of the days.
Hat is from a good friend I made acquaintance with here. He is quite the guy with a fishin pole, so only fitting to sport it.
