It might turn out to be an expensive blessing in disguise.
It's natural to be introspective after something like this, but you have a company to run and the world is your oyster.
Man I hate to hear all this. But it doesn’t surprise me. At least not now. I met @brianf and @Feniks Technologies along with the scam artist at PRE. The scam artist made me promises and then ghosted me. Like the next day. Thankfully I never gave him anything and I’m not out anything financially.
It’s not surprising that Dave and Brian have gone above and beyond to do that right thing. I’m thankful for people in the world like them.
I hope the project does make it further. As it showed so much potential. I also hope the scam artist gets what he deserves and pays for his crimes.

That's how most cons go. Start small, then gradually work up in severity. At my previous workplace we had 2 "Golden children" who were the president and treasurer of our union, and could do no wrong (kiss asses) in the eyes of the management, make off with $55k of traceable money and an unknown amount of cash donations made by the public. The treasurer changed the tax status of the union from a 501(c)(3) which is audited annually to a different charity status which is audited every 5 years or something.It amazes me how he thought he would get away with it
This only came to light.....( they were displaying falsified bank statements to it's membership).... because a bank employee was doing an internal review of different accounts and noticed there hadn't been any cash deposits into the union charity account in about a year, which was very unusual. That bank employee, thankfully not knowing the difference between the union and workplace, contacted a regular supervisor instead of the union member "in charge" of the account.
Criminal charges and jail time did happen thankfully. But the money obviously never came back. Both criminals made over $100k/year (when 100k was actually doing decent in life) so it's just just kinda crazy they both decided to do what they did.
I've seen this a fair bit, and there are some things that crop up frequently.
I've been called in to do a fair bit of accounting and forensic accounting for entities ranging from individuals/simple proprietorships to partnerships to corporate entities to trusts.
Sometimes the precipitating event is the death of a partner, and their beneficiaries want to figure out a way to keep the concern alive and healthy while still receiving the equity stake the deceased left them. Sometimes it's an S-corp or other pass-through entity and the shareholders want to know how best to proceed without endangering the status of the S-corp.
In other cases it's fraud or embezzlement, and the ripest target is a company that is doing lots of business because they are very good at what they do. Revenues are coming in, products are shipping, and customers are happy.
It's very easy to focus on one aspect of the business - making a damn good product - and some people are insanely good and making cool stuff.
I'm not one of those people, and so I focused on the business side of things.
None of the people who I did work for were stupid. I had heavy-hitting law firms specializing in securities law, engineering firms, medical practices, and even software developers. Many of them were much smarter than I was, I just happened to spend a lot of time and money studying a specific skill set to be able to figure out how to detect fraud or stop it from happening in the first place.
These were not dummies, and sometimes it's easy to focus on how well a company is doing or how promising it looks moving forward instead of taking a full blown accounting constantly of everything that is going on, and the fact is that it's very expensive and time-consuming to do that but also very expensive not to.
Sometimes the surgeon making a ton of money just wants to perform surgeries, and as long as he and his staff are paid, the business expenses are met, and the lights stay on, they don't get curious or don't feel like they have the time to delve into the financial weeds. After all, aren't they paying someone else to do that for them?
This is especially true when you have silent partners or investors who simply want an interest bearing vehicle for their money, they think the business idea is cool, but they don't really want to have to be too involved in the day to day affairs of the business.
Now none of this may be the case here with Hoplite, but it seems that fraud happens often enough (and I can tell you that it does) that there are enough people good at fraud to hoodwink smart, well-meaning people.

The one that shall be referred to forthwith as S.C. convinced me that “His” company was developing a rifle mounted LRF that they wanted to have beta testing by this summer. He knew I would be in heat for something new in this area.
He described the proposed housing, display and interface which I then critiqued the form factor on as being too big and obtrusive.
I finally figured out he was perfectly describing the Torrey Pines Logic unit. Any future communications that I would ask about progress on this LRF would be met with deflection to another more exciting tangent.
S.C. convinced me that “His” company was looking for more input on their chassis and also alternate chassis options. I shared my thoughts on going to an injection molded cheek rest for his chassis as well as a few other features.
Now I understand that he likely had no intention of using any of this information to actually further a project.
S.C. would text or call whenever there was a Hot Topic on this forum as if we were buddies.
S.C. got even more “good ol’ boy” leading up to the P.R.E. and I went along with it.
S.C. accompanied by the only legitimate people with Hoplite were the first heathens out of my inner circle to see the KMW Zealot.
A lot of S.C.’s interactions seemed “odd” but I wrote it off to his eclectic background and multinational nerdisms.
I mentioned more than once his lack of any accent which he wrote off as working very hard to sound like a “westerner”. He also claimed that he stuttered a lot and would work extra hard to enunciate correctly when talking. *I never noticed a stuttering trait in his verbal communication.
Soon after my return from the P.R.E., I was advised of the reality of things regarding the real S.C. and his games.
I was totally pissed off that I let my teenage enthusiasm with rifle shit put me into the danger zone of S.C.’s fuckery but my primary aggravation was that he massaged and fucked over @brianf .
So yes, I too was misled by S.C. and most probably the only reason he didn’t push harder for me to be more involved with “his” project is because he was just talented enough to figure out I am a poor ass redneck and with no real expendable assets for him to feed on.
It must be noted that, some members of his fine forum are worse than some little old grannies at the quilting bee trying to stir shit and throw doubt bombs just to be little bitches.

Reading through some of the posts on his older accounts reveals some interesting stuff.
He’s been a shyster for quite some time here.
He had a good con working, kept interest and anticipation alive well.
If he’d kept on the legit and worked that hard for the project instead of hustling it as brian said he’d be in a better position and probably make more $$ with excellent long term prospects.
But alas, a shit bird has to shit bird.
Actually it amazes me the rifle got as far as it did.

If you put in the legwork, sourcing quality components and assembling a working rifle is not that hard, the Lego AR companies do it everyday

I never followed anything regarding Hoplite. Don’t even know what it is. What got my attention was seeing names like Theis and Sihr involved in some type of cluster. Those guys were always active here on Snipershide and posted ALOT of technical info and interesting stuff. With all the threads on this topic flying around its very hard for someone like to me to “get the scoop” to what went down.

It’s one thing to explain the way certain thing unfolded, but with modern tech you can do a lot more and never be in the same room with people, that is the disconnect. Stuff was happening but nobody was together, much easier to hide the truth

Shit guys! I’m so sorry for all involved in this! I had my suspicions something was up but I did not know to what extent. What a POS! This really infuriates me! I sure am glad I never did the work for him that he contacted me about but I feel awful about recommending someone else for the job. I had a gut feeling that something wasn’t right and my gut has saved my ass more times than I can count. Such a damn shame someone would come into a community full of great people only to pretend to be one of us to run a scam such as this! Wow. I truly have no words! I have no dog in this fight other than the fact our community was betrayed and it really pisses me off, if I have not already made that abundantly clear. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. I wish the company and the customers the best going forward.

I’ll probably not be posting in this thread often after today or so. Will have other things to respond to.
I’ll let Brian go into detail, but short answer is Yes in the HP stuff.
I mentioned on our podcast that it was amazing how he didn't have a hint of an accent and it sounded like he grew up here. He gave me the same line, how it was "by design" and it was "a lot of hard work." Also mentioned the stutter thing.
He first contacted me about finding him a working dog and had a very particular type/style of dog. I actually found the perfect dog for the job and for a really good price. After working out the details with the owner/trainer, Theis flaked out saying "with all the traveling I'll be doing for Hoplite, nows not a good time." FML. He had 0 intention of getting a working dog.

As mentioned, one of the reasons for remaining private while sorting this all out was to keep the “Hoplite” name and brand from being labeled as a scam.
If that label were to stick enough the brand name is tarnished beyond repair….guess what? It gets shut down like any failed business. Then any pending accounts or partnerships stop immediately and money goes away.
So, while you all may be of the opinion that you’re looking out for community by prematurely forcing information into public…..
You are very well possibly creating a situation where you cause far more damage for anyone who still has a business relationship with Hoplite.
Of course, had people sent a PM, text, or phone call, we could have explained the plan and process playing out privately.

I’m going to go back and listen again, but When I listened to it the first time I definitely remember thinking, that was not what I expected at all. He seemed to not have very many answers, be as knowledgeable, or act like his online persona at all. All that being said I didn’t give it a second thought after listening as he had me fooled the same as everyone else.
Also with the power of hindsight thinking about more oddities his “testing” videos of him throwing an action on the ground with only them sexy legs in the shot were hilarious

As can be imagined, all projects are in a holding pattern pending litigation as i have said several times over the past 48 hours.

additionaly any information which you might display may possibly used in court to help the cause, so i will be sending paperwork over immediatly if i believe its useful
depending on what the lawyers and accountants suggest the website may stay in its curent state of evolution while subsequent trials are pending, which could take years as i have no timeline as of yet.
as a side note for all that believe they are involved and informed but are only getting pieces of information from a grapevine of sorts

PS. Now that I have that cleared up, I have this really good deal to offer you all on these x-ray sunglasses as used by special forces to cut down the flare and they are really tactical. in all honesty, if people are interested in what has been said or what has transpired there are 4-5 pages of posts made by myself and david which wil be more complete than a quick review
id always suggest learning on your own rather then seeking a easy answer
there are always multiple sides to the story, although i think im in the right opinions are welcome
i might even learn something from them
product and timeline information is also stated several pages ago with my first post in reaction to the erronous thread started late saturday night
any additinal information will be made public when its available and meets my criteria and the criteia of my legal team
my partner was one to give specific dates, im more for accurate timelines myself
if you or anyone are seeking particular information about the rifles themselves and or why certain materials were chosen id be more than willing to speak on the phone about the actual product which i am proud to have brought to its curent spec
although that information is available on this thread as well, we could go over the ins and outs of why certain materials were chosen or removed
just be warned i can nerd out about the design so the phone call might be longer than expected...lol
as david suggested above,
depending on the market presence and market opinion of the Hoplite brand when this is all said and done, it might be best to close hoplite destroy the inventory and start over
i have the plans and i have the design
in reality if the tax break equals the possible revenue from current inventory
i can then start over from a clean sheet distancing myself as far as possible from my partner..that might be the best move but only time will tell
of course i would rather not but if people persist in tying to drop flies in the oil, a less than positive opinon maybe had of hoplite by a new customer or a loss of sale by a possilbe customer who is turned off
both of which are not satisfactory in anyones eyes
