I will use this rifle for close range deer hunting occasionally. But mostly I would just like to have a rifle that doesn't have a scope on it. I was thinking like 1960s or newer. Mil-surp is an option I guess I'm just not sure about the calibers they come in and reloading possibilities.
I'm thinking I might want an older rifle with iron sights. Something with a wood stock. Considering I don't know a lot about rifles like this I'll ask for your thoughts. This would not be something I would really want to put a scope on.
I have an 18" 243. It's a pretty much stock savage 11 with a cut-down barrel. It's very light and handy. I have shot the 95 gr berger VLD at about 2800 FPS, but I wasn't pushing it. The downsides are that it is very loud (I don't have a brake on it) and it has more recoil than I thought it...
Finally got out and shot this today. Here are some results with Win brass, 210M's, H4831SC, and 95 Gr Berger VLD's. 44.0 Gr = 2700 FPS 44.5 Gr = 2730 FPS 45.0 Gr = 2755 FPS 45.5 Gr = 2790 FPS 46.0 Gr = 2850 FPS I could probably go up more as there were no pressure signs at 46.0, but...
