Re: Factors that affect the LR 308
A minimal gap means nothing.
The question is.
Is there is movement between the upper and lower DURING the time the bullet is traveling down the barrel?
Front to back?
Up and down?
Side to side?

Re: Coating Aluminum Rings after lapping?
If the lapping process removes enough plating to expose the bare aluminum I'd chuck the rings and go by some new ones.
A little oil on the bare aluminum should prevent contact with air on an installed set of rings.
The aluminum black works too.

Re: Optimum barrel lenght
Hi,
The optimum barrel length is directly tied to the time the bullet takes to exit the barrel. There are nodes or velocity vs time sweet spots.

Re: New Guy Question RE: Tools for Range Estimation
Jack,
The Leupold Duplex has a range estimation ability built in.
Download an owners manual from Leupold.
It's not as accurate as mildot but it's better than nothing.

Re: Building an accurate AR...
Yes.
Remove the muzzle brake, sight, hand guards.
Slide the barrel into the upper muzzle first.
Put some dykum on the face of the upper and then rotate the barrel extension against the face.
If you remove most of the dykum it's square.

Re: Cupronickel, that is not a typo.
From the wiki article.
"Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, bullet jackets were commonly made from this material. It was soon replaced with gilding metal to reduce metal fouling in the bore."

Re: flip up caps and "kill flash" for spotting scops ?
Butler Creek makes a 60mm cap.
Leuopld makes both for their MK4 spotter. Should fit the other Leupold's.
Both the caps & ARD are available from MidwayUSA.
And eBay.

They inexpensive and come in buckets of different sizes.
What is the diameter of the lens element in your light?

Re: anone use 6al/4v titanium for custom action
Titanium is not that hard. Try inconel or invar for some real fun.
You need the right tooling, speeds & feeds, but most of all the right coolant.
Tap with the wrong stuff and you've screw the pooch.
It really does like to work harden. Even...
