OP, posts 3 and 4 are sage. Common misconception is that higher magnification = better scope. If your budget is in the $100-$300 range, might also do some research on the fixed 10x from SWFA. Sacrifice variability for a very durable, serviceable scope at your price point.

That said, I’m hoping you get solid dope at 500 out there, before hunting at 500.

I run mostly fixed 10x non competition from 100 to 1080 yds. As everyone says, you absolutely see your target at those ranges, and trace and hits are not a problem. The main trade offs that I have run into with 10x are 1) harder to be absolutely precise at 100yd load development and 2) harder...

Something that stood out was your 100yd zero with a .556. Unless you are only planning on plinking at 100yds, would suggest researching AR-15 25yd zero, 36yd zero and 50yd zero. You may find a lot more success, enjoyment and versatility.

Sounds as plausible as anything. Was a reloaded round (Federal primer). I run a second cleaning of brass after resizing brass to get rid of residual lubricant. Possible that a piece of corn cob got stuck in the primer hole after that second cleaning, and then I pressed a primer on top of it...
