I went to Austria last year for a pleasure trip in 2024 so I felt obligated to finally buy a Steyr. I aways wanted one, specifically a SSG, but...Today, I picked up one after buying it on Gunbroker, new and hundreds less than retail. It's olive with the ventilated stock. The barrel is medium-heavy with 0.8" muzzle diameter. Trigger pull is under 3 pounds. By feel, there is no creep/slack and breaks clean at what "feels" less than what my tool reads. Interestingly, Steyr recommends first cleaning after 40 rounds. Traditionally, I do the 1, clean, 2 clean, etc. so whether I do 40 remains to be seen. It joins the other range rifles but this one gives me a hunting rig option. Glass decision will made this weekend...Kahles or S&B to keep the Euro theme. Range report to follow (compare with CZ 600 range).

We like pictures around here!

I’m thinking I will top it with S&B 3-18x42 Meta. I haven't hunted in forever so that may be a pipe dream but this is a small rifle. A large precision dedicated scope would look foolish. The stock is where Steyr cut costs, big time. I’m a little concerned that the size and weight and .308 will be, um, noticeable. I refuse to use a brake due to my hearing and my Banish-30 will help somewhat. The stock fore end can conceivably be filled with shot and epoxy but don’t want to get ahead of myself. Sometimes you just gotta take the punishment lol.

Update 1-I ended up buying the S&B 3-18 meta. I loaded some Peterson brass with SRP, 168 Sierra with 40.0 grains of 30 year old Reloader 12 set .02 off the lands. I did the old-fashioned look down the bore and check scope so I got on paper easily. I did 1 shot, cleaned with Hoppe #9 x 3 and then 1x3 shot. I used a bronze brush as recommended by Steyr. The POI did not change after each cleaning and all 6 shots grouped in 1.25" at 100 yards. The load is moderate with velos in the low 2400s. My plan is to break in the barrel with the new Peterson brass x 50 rounds of forementioned load.
