Lemme share a phrase I have found to disarm both cops and bad guys:
“I’m sorry.”
This has gotten me out of many jams. A lane of traffic, a parking space, getting your way is just not worth it in the long run. Let ‘em win. Trust me. 20 years later you’ll be glad you did.

I had a guy raging at me because he said that he had the right of way and I should have yeilded. He was in a 2500 crew cab RAM dually and me and the wife were on my Harley. He pulled alongside me at a traffic light. The wife reached and put her hand on my concealed pistol just as I smiled at the guy and said "I'm sorry that I ruined your day. Is there anything I can do to make it better?" He continued to rant and I repeated that I really didn't want to ruin his trip to Walmart and if I could do anything to make his day better. He rolled up his window and we went our way.

Similar to “I am sorry” is a phrase I used once that got me out of ticket. I passed a cop at about 75 mph on a 60 mph freeway. He pulled me over and asked me with a good bit of attitude, “What is your problem?” I replied, “I am a dumb ass”. After he stopped laughing, he wrote me a warning.

What’s right and what’s legal aren’t always the same thing.
You think that intentionally smashing into a motorcyclist because he was acting like an asshole is right? That act could have resulted in a pileup with multiple deaths and millions in property loss.

This forward-thinking state has allowed motorcycles to lane-split for some time by dint of a vague "it’s not illegal" stance. In 2016, lane-splitting was made explicitly legal, making California the only state to allow it to such an extent. Yay, riding in California! Try it when you’re there; it works and it’s magical.

Couple guys riding dirt bikes around town.
One riding a wheelie goes over backward, the other guy crashed over the crashed bike.

Locally we had two guys road rage each other they pulled into a parking lot and they shot each other, both died. Let it go and enjoy another day I say!

I almost never hock my horn, except when other people are honking at each I other. I like to return fire and confuse them. ("Why is THAT guy honking?")
Arizona is chock full of subhuman trash so I've had to deal with that a bunch of times, driving like an asshole is the norm here
The one saving grace of Arizona is that I can go out in the desert and shoot my guns but the democrats in phoenix are trying desperately to change that
If that’s the way you want to take it, do you think someone in a car should just accept when a motorcycle swerves at them, screams and gestures, then reaches for their saddle bag? Well, I choose my life over his, every time….
You can’t use deadly force unless he pulls a gun from the saddle bag and the threat to your life is imminent. Gesturing toward a saddle bag is not enough. Secondly, there are other people on the road you have to think about.
See.. this is where people need to shift their paradigm. People CAN use deadly force at any moment. Most humans are emotional and irrational.
So putting yourself in a situation to let some asshat go psycho on you is in your control.
Too many people here are trying to think “legally” about the situation. Yes, the auto driver did something illegal. That’s beside the point.
If you aren’t willing to die for whatever it is that you’re arguing about then don’t put yourself in that situation.
Both of these people are at fault… de-escalation is a skill more people need to learn and practice.
i almost got a ticket for laying on my horn at somebody that almost caused an accident (apparently did not understand traffic circles or didn't care).
the officer saw the whole thing and while he agreed with me, apparently laying on the horn to long is frowned upon.
used to be a proponent of negative reinforcement. these days i am more forgiving. it ain't worth getting shot or something.
I think a good comparison is walking in a crosswalk in front of a speeding semi.
The person in the cross walk has the "right" to be in the cross-walk.
They are also 100% dead. Part of being a a smart person is understanding that self-preservation is sometimes 1000% better than being "right". We live in a society of unhinged, uncultured lunatics (Have you seen congress and/or tiktok?). Caveat Emptor
I lived in a small town in Arkansas that didn’t have a stoplight at one time. Finally they put one at an intersection. ….Word didn’t get around to everyone I reckon ? A man and woman blew through a red light . I didn’t have time to react and my Triumph Bonneville and i T- boned a 65 Ford Galaxy 500 in the passenger door. I went up and hit the roof , then hit pavement to stop my flight. Broke numerous bones , broke front teeth out , deep abrasions all over. Had an open face Bell helmet on , cracked it bad but it probably saved my life. Ford 1 Sandhog 0 !
They used a wrecker to pull the bike out of the door , I buried it up good.
A cop told my mom if I made it past 16 it would be all gravy after that .
And..........so is driving 5 over the posted limit
California is the only state that lane splitting is legal...........there are several states that allow motorcycles to do what is called lane filtering, but most laws state that traffic must be stopped, or moving at less than 15MPH............no laws state you can blow down between lanes of traffic at 20 or more above Interstate speeds..........

Key Requirements for Legal Lane Filtering in Utah:
Roadway Structure: Must have two or more adjacent lanes in the same direction.
Speed Limit: Speed limit must be 45 mph or less.
Traffic Status: The vehicle being overtaken must be stopped.
Motorcycle Speed: Motorcycle speed must be 15 mph or less.
Safe Conditions: The maneuver must be executed safely.

Any contact during lane filtering is the liability of the motorcyclist, unless a vehicle door is opened in their path.
Lane Splitting:
Lane splitting (moving between moving vehicles) is not legal in Utah.
I live in Cali and I ride. I always get a chuckle when traffic is going 80 and a guy on a bike blows by lane splitting at a `100+. I just sing as he disappears "You gonna die......"
‘88 or “89 I watched a 21 y/o kill himself running from the cops. Over 100 in a 35. Young girl was turning out of a parking lot when he t-boned the front end. Flew about 100 feet before a building interrupted his flight.
There was a right curve about 100 yards from the scene. He wasn’t in sight when the girl started her turn. Interviews with his friends brought out the “cager” comments.
Cop chasing him said he intended to warn him.
There's a term we motorcycle riders live by: STAY IN THE BUBBLE AND OUTTA THE BOX. You need to accept complete responsibility for your safety, assume nobody ever sees you, that the driver’s looking at their phone, navigation screen or changing the music. Live or die or get maimed...it's completely on you. You must keep a 360* bubble around you at all times. If you follow someone too closely you sacrifice 25% of your avoidance space. If a second vehicle pulls up behind you, now you've lost 50% of your bubble and can only go left or right. If another vehicle pulls up alongside you you're down to a single exit move (lost 75% of your bubble) and if a 4th vehicle (even if parked) or a wall, ditch or anything else blocks you then you are in the box and gonna get schooled the hard way. Thinking you can advise people to drive better is naive. Nobody is paying attention. Safety is the rider's obligation all the time. I learned this the hardest way...totaled my first 5 bikes. Assume you are invisible and maintain your space...don't get boxed in. Get casual, you're going down. Ride in the box and you'll end up in a box. People today are crazy...torching Teslas as a political statement. Can't push the envelope...folks will kill ya for no reason.

I ran a 1/2 Marathon in Northern Cali in 2007. I was being driven from Gualala Ca to the San Francisco airport and we had to go over the Golden Gate Bridge. Once we got close to the bridge ….traffic started getting bad. We were going the speed limit and some 1% MC bikers on Harleys were lane splitting really fast.
No sooner had one dude blew by us , his “ Biker Wallet & Chain” came out of his right rear pocket , and $$$ bills looked like confetti at a parade. He had no clue
There wasn’t anyway possible to tell him or try to retrieve any of the bills , cause of the traffic.
Don’t know if they were 1 dollar bills or hundreds ??
Bet when he had to stop he wasn’t a happy biker.

Few years later he died in a motorcycle crash, i was right behind him. He had his helmet on, and yes we were able to have an open casket funeral, quite literally because he had a helmet on.

It was an old open face and it cracked. I heard they used a cast saw to get it off ….it stayed buckled. I wear one while riding both my Mt Bike & sometimes my brothers motorcycle.I SHOULD wear one everywhere , in anything I drive.
I hit a tree head on in a car once , they estimate I was going 30 mph. My chest bent the steering wheel on my way out the windshield. My head hit the pillar on the passenger side rear view …twisted me .
I ended up on the hood went through the windshield.
Many broken bones from ribs to collar bone through the skin , broken R elbow , beucoup cuts and scratches , and a cracked skull that left a big dent that I’ll always have. I was in a coma for over a week. Neuro surgeon said he had no clue while I wasn’t a quad or paraplegic , or dead.They say a cat has 9 lives , I’m about on # 12 or so.

This is certainly no 20 year-old lone female fearing for her life that’s 100 pounds soaking wet. This guy looks to be 6 foot plus and 200+ pounds.
As a lifetime biker who has over 150K miles in the saddle, this story and the reactions to it are really disheartening. Riding a motorcycle these days is one of the most dangerous things you can do. Add to the fact that I’m blind in one eye, just taking a leisurely ride with these psychopaths in cars on the road today, is a life or death matter. It is “running with the bulls”.
I call intersections “The Death Zone”. It is the place where human impatience meets stupidly.
In many states, if I so much is show my firearm in a threatening manner or reach for its grip on my side, I’m guilty of assault. But every time I go out on a motorcycle, somebody points 4000+lb weapon at me and either is reckless, negligent, distracted(cell phone), incompetent or threatening, as if it is simply par for the course.
If you are a biker who rides a lot you will be hit by one of these psychopaths. It is only a matter of time.
Sure there are a lot of asshole bikers. They are the ones who make the news. But I can tell you from experience there are many more hard-working good people out there driving their motorcycles minding their damn business every single day just trying to stay alive.
For the record, I have opposed laws like the one recently passed in Colorado that allows “lane filtering”. I do believe it will be abused and I believe it will cause more tension between cars and motorcycles.
Every single time I get on my motorcycle, my primary mindset and focus before I turn that key is on these assholes driving cars who will threaten to kill me with their actions. It’s not whether my bike tire will blow or will brakes fail or will I crash for some other reason. It is will some person in a car, who could care fucking less, kill me today.
