I guess I need a newer Hornady manual? A-tip data not found.

Got one last year I think it was, may have had it for two now, but there's no data for Hornady's A-tip in the Hornady manual I have. Can anyone post a screen shot for the 176gr .308 A-tip's? Using Hodgdon Varget.

I'm curious because there's a big difference in similar weight projectiles and max charge with Varget between the Hornady manual I have and the Lee manual I have....like 42 point something vs 45gr as max for 175-180gr jacketed projectiles.

Hornady lists it in the 176-180 page. Max charge of Varget 42.4.

Sierra’s max is 43.6. I don’t remember Hodgdon off the top of my head, but I think it was higher yet. Sierra’s max data has been fine for their bullets, and get the velocity to the right place, but, at least for the couple Hornady bullets I was messing with, I had to stick with their data.

Right, I have their 10th edition manual, I think they have an eleventh out now? Anyway didn't see the A-tip listed in the weight appropriate weight range and just wanted to be sure it didn't have it's own load data. I decided on 42grains for both the A-tip and 185gr Juggernauts...44gr for the 169gr SMK.

Yes, that was from the 11th edition. For whatever reason, I have found I could not load Hornady 165-168 gr bullets with the same charges of Varget that I can Sierra.

Different bullets, different materials composition, different expansion to seal the barrel. Quicker expansion means less blow-by, which means pressure builds quicker, which translates to lower max powder charge. Slower expansion means more gas leaks by before the barrel is sealed, which means pressure builds more slowly, which translates to a higher max load.
