Case use- defensive rifle with 500 yard capability. Will be running it with a red dot. $1200-$1500 range.
Under consideration:

Leupold Mark 4HD 2.5-10x42 FFP TMR reticle

Steiner T6Xi 2.5-15x50 FFP SCR reticle

EOTECH Vudu 3-9x32 SFP (least likely candidate but I like the size and weight)

Trijicon Credo 2-10x36 MRAD Precision Tree reticle

Just looking for opinions and/or alternative suggestions.

Thanks

I’d pick the mk4 out of what’s listed. Good optics. Steiner is good too, just heavy. My main complaint with the mk4 is the TMR reticle in FFP is kinda fat at 10x. I didn’t dislike it enough to prevent me from getting a mk5 with a FFP TMR reticle, but it’s worth noting. Honestly on a mk4, I wouldn’t be opposed with a SFP because the reticle is finer and the reality is 10x isn’t “too much” so you’ll likely turn the optic into a 3 OR 10x vs a 3-10

I still have a 2.5-10 NF NXS on 1 of my MWS rifles. As stated above, it’s either used on 2.5 or 10x. It’s an outdated optic but still works well enough that I haven’t felt the need to update it.

2-10 is one of those class of scopes that is very useful, but very few manufacturers put any sort of effort into them. I guess thats good and bad. There not being many to choose from is the bad and the fact that there aren't many to choose from is good too.

If you want something that's going to keep your rig nimble, either the MK4 or the Nightforce NXS. I have a Mk4 with illum and I appreciate it everytime I take it out. They are both light, reasonable in length and have very good glass. I prefer the FFP. Although it seems that I'm in the minority, I run mine between 6x-8x the most.

Notwithstanding what I said above regarding the scopes mentioned; for a rifle with the stated use, a defensive rifle for out to 500; I have two such rigs. For short to mid range I've found MPVOs to be a bit of overkill. What I mean by that is that you are going to be humping around magnification that you won't need, at the expense of weight and bulk.

On my two rigs, I run an LPVO on one and a TA11 ACOG on the other. They both do fine out to 500 for general purpose use. Of course, the 8x LPVO affords a good bit more precision than the ACOG does.

I bring this up because just looking at numbers on paper really doesn't convey the difference between running and gunning with a rifle with an LPVO versus running and gunning with a big, bulky optic on the same rifle.

My chosen LPVO is an NX8, but if I wasn't running that, I'd probably be running a SFP Credo with the etched reticle and BDC. It's a heck of a nice scope, although a little long for what it is.
