Just picked up my lone peak fusion action and have a 6.5mm bartlein barrel i want to turn into a 6.5cm and need a good gunsmith to chamber my barrel. Originally I was gunna do a prefit but more and more Im thinking im going to send in my action and have them custom cut it for my action to eek out as much precision as I can. I know bugholes is a great place especially for prefits but idk about custom chamberings? I know sac does custom jobs. Does anyone have experience with their barrel work? Anyone else you can think of that you know does great work throw me a comment and let me know.
Thanks

Prefit?
Ern at Altus does great work.

Fritz at Black Canyon Customs does great work too. Not sure if he is doing prefits or not? Not a big deal to send the action if you are shipping a blank.

I have several prefits from several places.
All shoot very well. Some better than an old hack like me deserves.
I would not be scared of a prefit 🤷‍♂️

I've had really good experiences with Triggered Precision Machine in Idaho.

Here's a video of a barrel TPM did for me. It's perfect.

You are gaining nothing by not doing a prefit. Unless you are a world class shooter who will spin up 5 barrels and toss the 4 worst shooters in the trash then thats not you. You wont be able to see or shoot the difference. Its a waste of time and money.

There are a bunch of good smiths out there. For the money the CRB Prefits are a good deal made by and chambered by World Champions. You could also use Stuetsville Precision Impact prefits that Impact sells, they are probably the cheapest/highest quality out there. Impact and lone peak are interchangeable.

Then there are a few dozen really well known and respectable smiths who can do the work. Find the Blank first then the smith. Your biggest challenge is going to be wait time. If you want really good work done fast, I can give the name of a few really good guys. Not going to be the cheapest but they can get it done fast and are respected members of the community.

I would stick to Bartlien, CRB, Krieger or Geissele for cut rifle blanks.

If you are near Seattle Buffalo Creek precision does very good work. If near Yakima/tricites then Angelos Ward is a well known smith. Alot of the west coast guys run Garret Preeces barrels. He does really good work but is in UT.

I have a mtu contour 6.5mm bartlein blank i just need to send it in somewhere. I didn't know that Impact and lone peak barrels are interchangeable. Very good to know.

Mike is the man.......he's cut me a ton of barrels, his chambers are immaculate.
Mike replaced my old smith I used for about 15yrs, my old smith was a super anal perfectionist when it came to gun smithing and Mike is the same, If its not right it don't leave his shop. Plus Mike is like talking to one of the fellas just a good dude.

The biggest benefit with having a competent gunsmith chamber your barrels over prefits is how consistent they can make your chambers and threading to your specific action.
In 5 different 6 dasher barrels I have not had to move my sizing die around at all. I also have my smith use my own reamer and have 24 firings on one lot of dasher brass through these barrels.

There’s also a different level of care you will get all together with using a smith vs just doing prefits.

I buy “semi-prefits” for the same reason. I’ve never sent my action in but I buy barrels from a single gunsmith who knows what I’m looking for and is very exacting. They are pre-fits in that he sets the measurements to a known standard instead of to an action I send him but there’s no headspace variation barrel to barrel in the many barrels he has made for me. They are not mass produced for sale on bulkbarrels.com. Heckler or Stuteville can do this kind of work.

Send the barrel to a smith and have them make a prefit for you. Contrary to what some think a smith does make a prefit. lol Find a good smith that will spin you up a prefit and send him the barrel and put it on when it gets done. Simple. No need to ship the action out and add more cost and hassle to the mix.

Their prints are different but they are common enough where the critical dimensions are the same. I cut both the same. They are interchangeable until they are engraved. The markings will not line up moving between an Impact and Fuzion.
