I’ll keep calling around and try the Edmund’s things. I’d love to get a diesel but don’t make money with it so hard to justify.
If / when the emissions crap goes away, then I would consider the diesel.
Don't bother. I have both. Granted, they're both 1 ton crew cab long boxes.
The Duramax gets about 2-2mpg better, but fuel has been running .50 more and 5 gallons of def every few thousand miles. Add in 2-3x the cost every oil change and fuel mileage isn't worth anything.
The diesel pulls hard. The gasser has pulled the same loads slightly slower. If you're not scared of rpm and let the gasser eat at 4000+ it'll surprise most people.
The 2018 Duramax has been into the shop for zero things not emissions related. Every time it was a $5k bill. It's sitting at 235k and has cost 4x the amount to keep on the road as the gas truck.
I can't do much on it because cab removal or toddler hands is necessary to get to much of it.
My 2016 6.0 gasser had zero issues until the converter gave up and glitter bombed the rest of the transmission at 315k miles ($4k with shift kit, fix kits, way bigger cooler, and billet converter). This could have been avoided if I had changed the junk converter for the $800 billet one as preventative maintenance.
Then it had a roller lifter stop rolling at 330k miles. Galled the lobe on the cam. Still ran perfect but had a screeching sound at idle. When I pulled the heads the cylinders were worn enough I decided to pull it for a full rebuild. I'll be into that about $6k all said and done (machine work, pistons, rebuilt heads, all bearings).
I did the trans and motor swap in my garage with jackstands and a $200 cherry picker. Saved myself about $8k in labor between the two.
Diesels are expensive, emissions diesels even more so. Unless you're towing over 10k on a regular basis it's a waste of money. Even then, I'll drag the 14,000 lb toy hauler around with the gas truck more often than the diesel because I know it won't decide the def is bad and put me in emissions limp mode...
