Steiner C35 Gen 2 - Initial range trips and first hunt - Updated 9/30 with third hunt

It was Rusan that had the eyepieces with the screw on adapters that fit the C2. The U.S. distributor said he couldn't get them which is weird since he's the distributor. But you can get them online from Optics Trade if I remember correctly. https://www.optics-trade.eu/us/manufacturer-rusan.html
😎 thx for that, it made my search way easier.

All the clip-on monocular adapters that OT carries:

Just Rusan’s

Sorta looks like PJ’s adapter is right in-line, size wise, with other manufacturer’s 3x adapters. So it makes sense to just go with that, I guess.

Do you guys have a different solution (upgrade path) to having to buy a scope and scanner, separated by a year or more? Ideally, in the end I’d have a 30mm tube TWS and a small scanner.

I got the mount directly from them ... http://www.praezise-jagen.de/ Shipping took about 15 days because of customs and it was sent DHL to my door. If you order make sure you get the OBJ lens measurement correct.

@35L4S SOTIC - After your write up - decided to give them a try - my objective measures 46.3mm - go with a 46mm or 47mm Base Clamp?

@35L4S SOTIC what have your thermal experiences been with the G2 unit? And is your mount is continuing to work well?
This is my first personnally owned clip-on thermal optic. And I dont have a lot of (very little) experience with other models. So far I like this one a lot and it discerns objects very well especially at this price point. I't does not work as well as a $30,000 unit, nor should it, but it is better than a Pulsar hand held I have. The mount works great as advertised and I was able to shoot and zero with a paper target on a cool day - no heating the target - and it shot a little over 1 MOA group. The limiting fator (rifle shoot 3/8 MOA easy) was the reticle / thermal limitations at low power. It just does not have enough "pixels" to zoom in for small groups. More than enough for game animals - not for dots on paper.

Thx man!

Buzz and reviews on this unit are still pretty non-existent. Thinking it must be because of the mounting situation?

I think both of the mount systems (QD and pic rail) shown on this thread would seem to solve that issue.

I can’t even find other forums threads across the ‘net on this thing, let alone a proper YT vid.

Anyway…

@pangris @35L4S SOTIC @Ape_Factory any further thoughts on this unit?

I thought something like this would maybe get me by for a year. With the repeatable Praezise-Jagen mount, I could use it as both a scanner and weapon sight.

Then, when a kid exits college and funds open up, I could buy a fancy dedicated thermal scope in a 30mm tube format and use the Steiner as a scanner.

Is this unrealistic?
Sorry, just saw this. Have since played with another unit that used a 2X eyepiece and that was useful. If one of those fit, I'd consider it, but yeah - the mount situation is dogshit by comparison to something that arrives with a rail mount attached.

So, have been using this Steiner for several more trips.

1) The resolution in front of a VX-6 or Vortex Razor continues to impress. I'm using this with a son or friend next to a NOX 35 and purely considering detection/resolution - its a coin toss.

2) I'm still mad* at Steiner for lying to me about the rail clip on adapter being a factory thing. I bought this literally the day they dropped and Steiner CS gave me the distinct impression that there would be a factory clip option "coming soon". The fact that is wasn't has been discussed ad nauseum, but I wouldn't have bought it know it was limited to using a Burris adapter that means that its only easy to use in front of a 30mm scope as a rail clip.

3) I'm working on getting my hands on an Athlon CL35 clip on, which appears it may be everything I hoped for in the Steiner + LRF.

*not really mad, am Buddhist, kind of

@Koshin, any updates on the mount? I still haven't received anything.
you missed one "k", so I did not see this.

About a week or so before the get delivered to Annex. They'll check for any dimensional issues and, if all goes well, start sending them out a few days after.

Random but who makes the core for the c35? What is it comparable to? I'm just curious I have a guide TB630LRF on the way. Just curious on what the clip on is comparable to? NOCPIX seems to be coming with a clip on as well, given their recent offerings it's sure to be nice.

I find the image of the C35 to be better than the Guide, but, the LRF makes up for it by a mile.

The image of the Steiner is really really really good. Image on the Guide is totally adequate to do God's work and you'l know if that coyote is 100, 200, 300 yards away...

Good enough for me. Thought i might could do without a LRF seeing as most clip ons don’t have them. But they’re trending towards having them and i would definitely benefit with one. I was hoping it was on par with the Steiner. As long as i can zoom in a little more than 4x I’ll be happy. The hydra is a great little unit for 3in1 but it’s not the most suitable clip on. For the price of both units i can’t complain. If this Nocpix changes up the game i might be getting rid of both the hydra and guide to fund it. Ultimately I’m planning on the halo C when i actually have some real income.

It isn't light years better.

Me personally, I believe that either is more than adequate for species ID *for my purposes* which is to say out to at least 300 - 400 yards I have no concern about confusing a coyote/deer/pig/calf even in mediocre conditions with any of the devices being discussed.

You're inspiring me to go check out the Steiner and Guide on a side by side while my dog stalks a field.

Additional data points for Steiner c35 gen ii here. Been using it for just under a year now and it’s done well as a bell clip on. With the release of the annex defense mount mentioned in this forum, I played around with it as a clip in in front of other devices like eotechs and it worked well - just not functional for every day use due to the inability to quickly release it outside of mounting it on a Unity QD riser.

Since then I recently grabbed an RH-25 V 2 and it’s a game changer in terms of clip on capabilities, but I will say the Steiner performs close to the same image quality when used in front of my Lpvo 1-10. The Steiner I’ve comfortably used for PID out to 10X and the rh-25 gives you just a touch more detail. However, the Steiner had such a small POI adjustment required when placed on the scope initially, where as the RH-25 was incredibly poor for first shots without collimation.

All in all the Steiner is such a steal in this market if you place to use it as a clip on only. Bell adapters are easy to get with Burris and they lock in place fantastic. The RH-25 is a phenomenal unit and hybrid, but at 3x the cost right now it only
Makes sense for those looking at helmet mounted options.

Currently running the rh-25 with a Wilcox flip to side and SBR dovetail. Helmet mount is a Wilcox bridge I snagged on the cheap surplus, and this combo makes it such an awesome package for those looking for a similar experience.

A) Annex now has thumb screws that are quick-er release

B) Brilliant point on the ability to put the Annex on a QD riser - as long as you have the same height on the optic, same same.

I think/hope the thumb screws are an adequate fix.
