Red dot or reflex for rapid target acquisition during a PRS match

If you can't quickly find your target - especially an up-close rimfire target - without a red dot, your magnification is too high. Use binoculars prior to your turn to shoot to note terrain features around targets to aid in acquisition. Seems to me that moving one's head around going from one sighting device to another is a time sink.

While I don't doubt that some people might use this red dot approach, I can honestly say I've never seen it in the matches I've shot over the last seven years. I tend to stay close to home with the same several dozen shooters, though.

If you have a mount or rings that support it (MPA, MDT, and Warne are ones I have used), that works well. There is also this that works well - ToopMount 34mm/1.34 inch Scope... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SJVZJC4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

My red dot of choice is the Vortex Venom. Having the dot right over the top of the turret allows you to drop right down behind the scope. I do not like the offset ones personally as it it less natural for me to come in from the side. You can your optic at much higher power for spotting impacts when you use the dot.

Venom red dot on printed diving board to get the exact height I wanted. Not as needed in rimfire for my blind ass, but still there because it’s basically a clone of my dasher and I wanted it as close to the same as possible.

Mine is offset to the left mounted on an ARC-M brace. I use my left eye for the Amazon cheap red dot and my right eye for the scope. Works surprisingly well.

You will see a red dot on almost none of the good shooters rifles. Learn to find a target with your eye and put the gun down so the target is within the scope fov. It's a very real skill and something that you have to learn if your going to be decent at this game. Don't lengthen your learning curve by trying to cheat with a dot.

It's one of the easiest things to drill for. Don't even need to pull the trigger. Incorporate it into your drills.

If you look in the scope and don't see or know where it is, come out of the scope and look over the turrets. Eventually you will point the gun where your body is directed and your eye is looking. It's one of the reasons NPA and being square to the target/gun is important.

With proper NPA and some practice you shouldn’t need one.

I was always a 8-14x magnification guy, but have since become a 18-25x guy for rimfire stuff.
When targets were all 1-2mil in size low magnification was ok, but now I’m having to shoot .5mil or smaller and needing to see my misses higher magnification is needed.

It took a bit of practice but now I can come up on a target fairly easily on 20x, if mess up bag placement or my NPA I may end up hunting a little bit, but very rarely need to zoom down.
