Harris bipod adapter?

I have a Harris S-LM bipod with the classic stud mounting clamp and a pod loc, attached to my Tikka Tac A1 using a Magpul MLOK stud.

A lot of people recommend to get an adapter such as Really Right Stuff’s, to remove the standard stud mounting plate from the bipod and replace it with an adapter that interfaces directly to Picatinny/MLOK/ARCA. Depending on what your rifle has.

I really wonder what the benefit is? My setup appears solid. I never have to re-tighten the stud mounting bolt, and if I would replace it, I’d lose the benefit of those two leaf springs.

What those guys said. I’ve always thought the stock stud clamp to be a mini-marvel of Rube Goldberg engineering. I like it, but sometimes I hate it.

With the pace precision rifle accessories are developed at I really thought that design would be abandoned but it has hung around for decades.

OP one other advantage to a full length arcs rail on the forend is you can easily attach your rifle to a tripod with arca clamp or add other arca clamp widgets like a chronograph or support bag. If you don't use any of that equipment then it won't make much difference for you.

Thanks all. Seeing as I exclusively shoot prone or from a bench, no PRS-like things yet, I can stick to my stud attachment without missing out on anything.

Once I start dabbling in PRS I'll probably attach an ARCA rail for a rail bag at which point I can upgrade the bipod.

I don’t shoot PRS, just a varmint hunter here. So on a regular wood stock I like just a short arca rail near the magwell for a tripod and a short pic rail at the end for a bipod. See below (and ignore the can koozie on the scope lol! Failed cheap hood experiment.)

That’s a fairly thick stock near the magwell. I don’t feel the arca rail at all. Personally, I think an arca section out front on this type of rifle looks dumb as it is often are too wide for the stock.

On narrow rifles, I might move to a short pic rail near the magwell as an arca rail sorta sucks to grab. Especially in the depths of winter. Certain RRS clamps can grab both pic and arca rails.

Currently, on those narrow wood type stocks I just use a RRS Vyce on a tripod.

Another option would be a rail like this Seekins or Odin Works, both of which turn the arca 90° for better hand ergos. Downside is the only way to adjust rifle balance on a tripod is to reposition the rail. But if you’re not a tinkerer, once you’ve set up the gun it probably won’t be a problem.

Odin makes both a mlok and screw version. I swear Seekins used to also make a screw version. I like the Seekins better as it looks more rounded. One could grind off the mlok bits, I suppose.

With chassis stocks, I just have a full-length arca rail. Krg chassis are contoured in such a way that I don’t even feel the arca rail. Not so on my AIAT! Ouch.

Once you realize the versatility of ARCA you never will go back. Virtually all my scopes guns from hunting to fighting to comps have arca rail. Doesn't sound like a need based on your current shooting but once you expand your horizons it will make a lot of sense.

I ran a sling stud Harris for a long time, only changed once I went to ARCA on my comp rifles.

The only reason is see for you to change is if you want a different bipod that doesn't have a sling stud option.
In which case either ARCA or pic rail would be fine.

I like full length ARCA as I like to clip into a tripod and it keeps the forend flat/clean. But if it wasn't for comp shooting I'd probably just go for picatinny.

OP, I started precision rifle eight years ago with exactly the same rig that you have. I ran it for a year or two in PRS-style competition. A few thoughts based on experience:
  • The advantage of a picatinney or ARCA mount over the sling stud mount is additional strength and flexibility, especially for competition use.
  • If indeed your shooting is only from a bench where there is no advantage to moving your bipod back&forth and you're not potentially bashing the rifle around on props, your current setup is fine.
  • Even from a bench, there is some advantage to the wider footprint of something like an Atlas BT-65NC ("no clamp") with an RRS pic/ARCA adapter on it. I think an Accu-Tak of some flavor would run near the same price point and could offer more flexibility - if you ever need it. For your current use case, the cost of something like these bipods ($300 or more) may not be worth the slight advantage.
  • I've been running the aforementioned Atlas/RRS combo in competition for years. Simple and rock solid and the ability to move the bipod back&forth on my MDT ACCs' long ARCA rail is practically vital for match use. I've considered upgrading to something like a Ckye-pod for additional flexibility but have just been too cheap. My point here is just an underscore to the thought that there is no significant advantage to a super-adjustable bipod in your current use case.
My $.02. Enjoy what you have and upgrade if you want!
