Does anyone load 7mm Rem Mag w/ 175 SMK and 4831? I have a couple of loading manuals they both say the max load with that bullet weight and that powder gives around 2660 fps. I have loaded to this point and have decent accuracy. However, I have also read other places and heard from knowledgable people that they will load this same bullet and powder up to 2950 fps. What is up with that? Do the loading manuals tend to be overly conservative for legality sake? This is what I tend to think. I guess I'll have to keep on loading and see what I can do without over pressure.

60.9 get's you 2900, from a Sierra manual, for std 4831, what are you looking at?
Sorry, I should have specified. I was using H4831SC. Highest I went was 64.0 gr pushing the 175 SMK and got 2870 fps. Respectable, but RL-25 got me slightly over 3000 fps before I hit pressure.
I've got H-4831SC actually. Looking at data from Hodgdon and Lee. Perhaps Lee got their data from Hodgdon. Even if I can push it to 2850, that's still a good deal faster than I'm going now. I'll just have to try it and watch out for pressure. I'm still kinda new to reloading, having done it for about 3 years. Don't know exactly what all the pressure signs look like yet. I know to look at the primers for being flattened as well marks from the bolt face (ejector, extractor). Any bulges or failures of the case are a no brainer obviously.
How about the 160gr. Nosler Accubonds for hunting with some RE-22, anyone have any good data that worked for them? It will be used in a factory Rem. 700 CDL in 7mm Rem Mag.
I am debating between a 6.5 284 and a 7mm Rem Mag. Ballistically, the 7mm has got my eye, but I have been warned about the recoil. How do these loads feel. I will be firing about 50 rounds per competition.

Any help from some veteran reloaders, very much appreciated.
I just bought a box of Hornady 162gr AMAX bullets. They were recommended on another thread on this site. Much better BC and initial velocity......I'll know this weekend, if the weather cooperates.
Note that this is WAY (about 7%) above any published maximums that I've found. Note also that my oal is significantly longer than SAAMI specs suggest.
bullet: 162 grain Hornady Amax
powder: 42.0 grains of Varget
OAL: 2.905"
primer: BR2
brass: Winchester
barrel: 25" Pac-Nor SS Match with 8" twist
action: Savage 10
MV: 2805 fps average (was 2725 when the barrel was new and clean, it may be lower now that I cleaned it and removed the carbon boulder. In any case, MV's were always very consistent in each session)
neck tension: No idea, but I use a full-length redding bushing die, and it resizes a minimal amount. So I guess my answer would be 'not much.'
Thanks guys, I'm looking for a good offhand to 500m load with the Seirra 168. I gotta load mag length in a SA 700, so as much as I like Amax's they're out for my purposes.
A benchrester and another silhouette shooter told me to load around 2300fps, and as this would be slow for 600-1000yd does it sound ugly for an offhand load?
bullet: 162 grain Hornady Amax
powder: 44.0 grains of H380
OAL: 2.800"
primer: CCI 200
brass: Federal .308 Match brass resized
barrel: Savage 22" 1 in 9
action: Savage 10
MV: 2850 fps average
30fps max deviation
Temp 55
Baro 30.09
RH 11%

It was a bit breezy this morning but it still grouped at .72" for 5. (one was very probably me.)
Taco
Glad to see the 162 A max is working and getting good Vol. at your 2.800" OAl. The H380 is one of the powders I am going to try. I also want to try H414, and R19. Brock
Taco, any further testing with the H380? I'm currently using IMR4350, but thinking about switching to get above 2800fps. Isn't H380 known to be temp sensitive?
You can reach top performance, low velocity spread with 160gr SBT / 168gr HPBT / 175gr SPT weight bullets with Norma MRP and Hodgon H1000. In a 26ic match tube speed go from 3050 fps to 3200fps in my rifle.
There is an excellent article about 7mm Remington Magnum in the 17th edition of "Hanloader's Digest". It will be a very good thing for some people to read it.... the author drive a Nosler 162gr SB at 3160fps and 3088fps from a 175gr Speer from a 24ic barrel with heavy load of H1000.
They'll understand why the 7mm Remington Magnum show some astonishing performances with only few powder... The 7mm RM is a finicky caliber to reload but when you combine right brass, right powder, right primer it's magic...
don't under estimate the of Brass... lot of 7mm RM brass have lower capacity than they should have... Favour quality brass even if the cost is price... Norma Brass have no contender... Lapua, Hornady are right choices too.
All loads were a little hot, not really to bad though. It was freezing and altitude is high. Im going to dial down a couple grains and see how velocity holds up. H1000 and RL22 seem to hold better groups.
Anybody know who else makes 7mm WSM brass besides Winchester?
You guys realize that even though SAAMI says the case length is 2.100", it's only about 2.090. And it hasn't reach 2.1" even after 6 reloads and without any trimming. What's up with that?
