    I did the same but had it in a Boyds laminate stock. It shot .5 or better after bedding and lapping. Dollar for dollar, these are hard to beat.

    Bed the action, lap the rings, used a picatinny rail scope base, adjusted trigger pull, put some decent glass on it, torque everything to the proper in/lb, and used a Boyd's laminate stock.

    I did the .308 heavy barreled action with a Boyd's varmint stock and it shot .50 moa with federal gmm. You need to build it right though.

    I agree with what's happening JEC. I just don't think the rifle takes near as much abuse because allot of the energy is translated to the shooter. I see why you did it the way you did though.

    This would not happen under normal shooting conditions because it's not rigidly constrained to a lead sled. He should do the same test from bags with a person on the stick.

    When you do buy your factory rifle, don't buy a 308 unless you have to. It's in your own best interest to get it in 260 or 7-08 if they are offer it.

    I agree, with the statement from Shooter. I bought the Howa 1500 heavy barreled action in 308 for around $500 and then bedded it in a Boyds laminate stock around $110, and the thing was a 1/2 moa rifle. You get the good extractor and the one piece bolt with the Howa. That is what I cut my teeth...

    I mean it needs to be put together properly, bolts torqued properly, components mated correctly with one another, overall solid rifle. When assembled correctly, it will be one unit and not items connected to each other. Sometimes you can thump the barrel on a precision rifle and hear the barrel...

    I do FEA all the time at work and have been wanting to model all the different barrel modifications just to show people how stress propagates through structures. You may get your spiral fluted or dimpled barrel to shoot bug holes, but it's still not as optimal as straight flutes. To each his own...

    You have a valid point, it will twist, but it will twist consistently if floated properly.

    The minor of OD of the cross section is the actual barrel OD. The guy actually added a bunch of weight to his barrel so he could have diamonds. Sorry for the negativity, it just baffles me why some people want to degrade the performance of their gun for cosmetics.

    Anything other than straight fluting is a degradation in performance. I know the spiral looks cool too, but it promotes twist during barrel whip.

    For starters, I wouldn't go with a 308. Hence I just got finished with a .260 build. Go 6.5CM or .260 Rem, why go with the Mustang when you can have a Ferrari.

    The CSR muscle brake and Armalite brake are the most effective. They will piss off your neighbors the most because of the rearward gas dischard, but that's why they're the mose effective.
