Rifle Scopes Fixed SWFA 12X for 100-600 yard local matches?

My only reservation to selecting a SWFA fixed model is if my son decides he wants to hunt with this rifle. We've got another rifle for deer hunting, so this would potentially be used for coyote, bobcat, groundhogs, etc. I guess if we go that route we could consider off-set mounted irons/red dot.

Rifle Scopes Fixed SWFA 12X for 100-600 yard local matches?

My son (13) and I have been competing in local club matches over the past two years or so. He, at times, outshoots me which is somewhat demoralizing. But hey, I can claim he had a good teacher, right? The matches start out at 100 yards shooting 1 MOA dots, we then shoot from 200-450 yards...

    Which Savage do I buy?

I have two Savage 10FPs. One in .308 and a second action only that I'm building into a .223 as a tactical match rifle for my son. My .308 sets in a Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist that I did some DIY mods to. I'm really happy with its performance (with the stock 26" varmit taper barrel)...

From Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist to McMillan A5 . . . my stab at stock modification.

Bondo is holding up just fine. No signs of cracking or wanting to come off. Admittedly, where I did use the Bondo it was fairly thin. Mainly used it to fill small voids and even smaller pinholes or bubbles. Worked well for that purpose.

From Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist to McMillan A5 . . . my stab at stock modification.

We had a chance this past weekend to fire the Savage with the modified B&C stock again. The adjustment collars for the raised cheek piece seem to be holding strong. On Friday, my 12-year old son fired about 15 rounds in preparation for Saturday's match. The next day, he completed the 20-round...

inletting your own stock for dbm

I too thought that a router would work as well. You could make a template of the DBM and then affix the template to the stock. Using a router bit with a bearing, and following the template, that should do it. Although that sounds like a do-able option, I think I'll just send mine off to...

Reveal between barrel and stock tutorial

Nice job. I usually end up opening channels for larger barrels but this is a good solution for the reverse. I wonder how much rigidity this would add. And, would a JB Weld or Marine Tex make it more rigid? Just thinking aloud in reference to flimsy stocks.

    Home made Covert Case

Outstanding idea. Using the tool case is a great idea, but if it were sitting inside my truck and someone peered trough the windows it may have almost as much "take me" on it as a standard gun case. It does, however, work well for carrying gear to and fro and not cluing others into what you're...

From Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist to McMillan A5 . . . my stab at stock modification.

hermosabeach, I think that's a valid idea. However, it would be best to drill the 3/4" holes for the collars first as they'd be hard to place once you drilled the 3/8" holes for the rods. Just the nature of drilling the larger hole without something to center the bit. I also...

Alright, I think we're about done. I decided to persue the idea of cutting sleeves to install on the riser rods. Again, they serve the purpose of keeping the cheek piece at a consistent height when re-installing it following cleaning/maintenance. Picked these up at Lowe's last night. I...

From Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist to McMillan A5 . . . my stab at stock modification.

With the rear collar breaking loose, I employed the following fix to re-secure it in place. First, I used a hacksaw blade to extend the hole to the rear, stopping at the rear, angled cut. I didn't open the hole itself as I wanted it to still provide support for the collar. I used a plastic...

Right now I'm waiting for some Marine Tex to set up. I'll post some pics in the near future of how I repaired the rear collar that broke loose after the range trip.

    Load development in a Box

Nice! Although I only live a few miles from my local range, something like this would be sweet for load development. Case prep and priming would be done at home and you'd be set for powder and a bullet on scene. I saw the video that Lowlight did on the Robert Gradous build. Robert's got a...

Please post up photos when you can. I'm picking up some more Marine Tex tomorrow for my repair of the rear collar. I might use your method of "filling".

When I got the rifle back to the shop I discovered something amiss with the cheek piece. While the set screws held the riser rods just fine, the rear stop collar had broken loose. What little stock material had remained to secure it to was apparently not enough. So, I've managed to remove the...

From Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist to McMillan A5 . . . my stab at stock modification.

Update: I had the rifle out to the range today for its first run after the stock modifications. I'm happy to report that no accuracy was lost and all of the upgrades worked extremely well. I shot five, five-shot groups to test out some reloads. After the first string was done, I'd remembered...

Measured it just now. Looks like I cut down about 1 1/4" from the top of the comb. If I were to do it again, one inch would be what I would go with. That should be just about right to avoid plunging the 3/4" bore for the rear stop collar into the void of the stock. Obviously, a smaller hole...

Doubling up on the set screws wouldn't hurt and is a good idea. But, there may not be enough thread depth for a second set. For now those little hardened buggers are biting into the riser rods enough to leave marks. I'm guessing they'll hold fine. I was looking around for knobs today to use...

Bell and Carlson Tactical Medalist to McMillan A5 - Stock Mod Turorial

I posted the following over on the DIY page. Until recently I never ventured over there so I though some of you in the bolt gun crowd may enjoy this and find some inspiration for your own projects. Take a look see . . ...
