    Gunsmithing Muzzle Brake Thread Size

I would not think that with 10-32 clamping screws you could generate enough pressure to constrict the bore. They will pop the heads off long before that (I know this to be true, I have had more than a few guys bring in rifles with snapped screws. Left handed drill bits are a Godsend). Much more...

    Gunsmithing Muzzle Brake Thread Size

Because you are not putting the threaded shank in tension. Too much tension and you stand the possibility of distorting the bore slightly. I have a customer that insist's I barely overtime a brake. When he does the final installation he Loctites and times it 12:00. He wants no tension on the...

    Gunsmithing lathes

I am no electrician but as it was explained to me 3 phase has a smoother power curve. AC electricity cycles at 60 Hz, meaning 60 pulses per second. With standard 220 you have two hot legs so power is "on" 120 times per second. With 3 phase it is "on" 180 times per second so there are more...

Thanks Del but most these folks here are a mite wiser than me, I learn something new every time I drop in here. That being said-OP, check your PM's.

Gunsmithing AR-15 Stripped Lower Assembly - What Gives?

Or if a local shop has one in stock, shouldn't run you more than 3-4 bucks. Can you measure the pin you have now? If it is Colt big pin, should measure .315. If so I will gladly swap you a normal sized pin.

Gunsmithing Recommend a good 5/8 x24 thread cutting die

Like I said in post #9, turn down the FUBAR shank, sweat a bushing on and turn/thread. Anything else is not going to yield good results.

Gunsmithing AR-15 Stripped Lower Assembly - What Gives?

I don't recall RR ever producing a Colt style large pin. That being said both takedown pins should be a hair under .250 and the holes in the lower right at .250. Measure the takedown pins. If the front one is out of spec contact RR. They have decent customer service and have responded well in...

Gunsmithing Recommend a good 5/8 x24 thread cutting die

You probably don't have acceptable major diameter if a pinned brake was spun off of it. Obviously length is a concern as it was pinned in the first place so cutting off the munged threaded shank is a no go. I think I would turn the old threads off, sweat a bushing on and turn/thread the bushing.

Gunsmithing Recommend a good 5/8 x24 thread cutting die

Use a thread file first and just address the munged threads only.

    equipment vs. skill

The firearm is simply an instrument of the individual. The individual makes the difference.

Gunsmithing Rem 700 Barrel thread specs

You bring up two very good points: 1- the "smith" has no pride in his work nor integrity.(a very bad combination) it fails me constantly when I see work like this how one can even allow it out of their shop. 2- anything he touched on this rifle should be questioned.

Gunsmithing Rem 700 Barrel thread specs

Good grief! I worked in machine shops that had some real knuckleheads, cokeheads, potheads and boozers that turned better threads than that. Tool angle? Try "Rock Angle"

    Gunsmithing Timing a muzzlebrake

Don't use a crush washer on a brake. On a flashider or comp, ok but not on a brake. You can do it the fast way or the right way. Choose one.

Gunsmithing Dye to identify wear points?

Dykem or Sharpie for metal to metal is hard to beat. But it won't hold a candle to soot for inletting metal into wood. It is not greasy like inletting black, lipstick or Prussian blue so clean up is much easier and you don't stand the chance of staining a stock. I will frequently soot metal part...

    Gunsmithing Removing Savage BAS?

Not a problem: http://m.sears.com/index-g.html#/productdetails/00947641000P?partnumber=00947641000P I got mine a long time ago but Harbor Fright has them for 15 bucks or so. Get a good quality Allen head for it and go to town. They work great in the right application.
