    Gunsmithing Lathe selection

I need to school myself more on carbide grades/composition. For some reason I've yet to figure out (no doubt type of carbide), both the standup and laydown carbide partial profile inserts leave me with substantial chatter on the threads. Full profile- smooth as a baby's... Plus, ya just can't...

    Gunsmithing Lathe selection

Old 'Merican iron is an option but getting tougher to find. Depending where you are geographically, they can be scarce, or common... where I am in the SE, it's a machine desert- in the NE, and N central (former manuf hotspots) they're much more common. You need to know at least basics on how to...

    Mauser 24/48 build

There's the M48, and there's the M24/47 (M24's re-arsenaled in 1947). The M48's were post-war, domestically (Yugoslavia) produced and are usually in very good/arsenal condition. Both are intermediate length actions. . The Yugo's utilized a "safety breech" which- if used on the rebarrel- would...

    300 PRC throating reamer

The best way to "DIY" off the lathe is with a PTG Uni-Throater. Integral guide/positive stop. Significant investment for a one-time use, and they're caliber-specific. I cannot stress enough that you need to proceed very carefully. You're removing a human hair's worth of material...hot knife...

Gunsmithing Magnum, or Ultra Magnum M700 Receiver for .300 PRC?

^^^ Not mine- he already has a magnum action. I didn't ask for advice/M700 bashing that seems to be a pastime here- the new production receivers are in fact, pretty damned good from the few I've handled.

Gunsmithing Magnum, or Ultra Magnum M700 Receiver for .300 PRC?

^^^ Thanks. Forgot that the RUM has a rebated rim. The wider feed rails on RUM action are because of the .550 body. But, question still remains whether the RUM action has a longer cutout? The PRC is close to RUM length, longer than "std" LA chamberings.

Gunsmithing Magnum, or Ultra Magnum M700 Receiver for .300 PRC?

.300 Win Mag = .513 base .300 RUM= .550 base .300 PRC= .532 base PRC is midway between the Win Mag and Ultra Mag. No tech information/prints available from Remington. Will the PRC feed through the rails (without modification) on the magnum action, or is the ultra-magnum receiver needed?

Coup De Grâce, New Action from American Rifle Company, $899 WOW!

Yeah, fair enuf... guess it was more of being stunned that there's an action (soon) that'll be capable of handling the Lapua/Norma mags at near half the cost of the other players...(y)

Coup De Grâce, New Action from American Rifle Company, $899 WOW!

Forgive me for not reading through 1000 replies on this thread to see if this has been asked/answered- but this line in the original post got my attention. Bolt lugs/receiver abutments are beefy enough to safely withstand the bolt thrust of the Lapua? Is the bolt body "typical" .700 nominal?

    Bedding a savage 110

Nonsense. Boyd's just doesn't want to fuck with it, maybe because the rear pillar is notched for the sear) Plenty of places to buy the pillars, including Stocky's: https://www.stockysstocks.com/savage-10-110-steel-pillar-sets.html Easy to DIY the pillar install. Receiver bedding is a bit more...

    A toast to the venerable Remington 700 5R mil-spec

Good to hear. I've seen nothing but positives on the "new" Remington Arms production of M700's. Now, if only I could get my hands on an Alpha...

    SVT-40 Barrel Print?

I've been approached to rebarrel an SVT-40. Looking at the schematic the barrel machining itself looks "reasonably" straightforward. As far as disassembly of the pinned parts, maybe not so much but I've found front-end gas housing, rear sight NOS parts if needed. Does a print exist for these...

    7-6.5 PRC

Whole 'nother type of receiver needed because of the boltface/bolt thrust. No different that building a .338 Lapua, and I won't do that on a long action not engineered for it. Yeah, some do it- not this guy.

    7-6.5 PRC

Obviously... which is why this 7mm fanboy is doing a 7-300 PRC on a long action ;)

    Barrel Install

Nickel anti-seize. One shouldn't use copper anti-seize with high-nickel alloys like stainless steel.

    Remington 700 Long Range

A buck for the 300 A-Tip, less than a buck for powder at 90-something grains, ten cents for a primer these days, and maybe fifty cents for pro-rating brass at 5 loads. Less than $3/round. Seeing the impact on the steel plate at one mile, priceless  Nothing's cheap in the ELR game.

    Remington 700 Long Range

The new Alpha 1 models- apparently not yet on the shelves, and being rolled out from the new Georgia facility- are machined to much more precise tolerances. One-piece bolts that are interchangeable, along with spin-on barrel swaps. I'm rooting for them- I'd like to see Remington return to its...

    Who has a Gunwerks GLR?

Thanks, good to hear. I'm going to use a 30 MOA rail, so an integrated 20 isn't what I'm looking for.
