Can't find any good wood stocked rifles anymore

I had a Winchester M70 with a Maple stock that I loved. In fact, if I could get a M70 in stainless, with a 13.25” LOP maple stock, and proper long action (min, 3.7” internal box mag), and 3B equivalent contour, I’d buy it right now. If wishes were horses…

    Caldwell BiPods: Cheap and Functional?

The expression "Good isn't cheap, and cheap isn't good" comes to mind. Generally speaking, cheap gear is a roll of the dice. It might work, it might not. If it does work, the question becomes "how well and for how long?" and that depends largely on how you use it. Maybe the Caldwell unit is...

Coup De Grâce, New Action from American Rifle Company, $899 WOW!

It's not common anywhere ;-). Nor is good writing, as I failed to delineate that which was in response to you (intended to be good natured, by the way) and that which was in response to a sentiment expressed by several others.

Coup De Grâce, New Action from American Rifle Company, $899 WOW!

CDG will always be Charles de Gaul for many of us... and that acronym shall never pass my lips in reference to anything else. ;-) Also, if you think "coo-d-gra" is too long of a name, but have no problem with "ar-che-mee-dees" you're probably the same jack ass using "lima charlie" instead of...

    A toast to the venerable Remington 700 5R mil-spec

Out of curiosity, what are the real-world weights on these? Seems like Remington has listed just about everything you can buy with an HS Precision stock as 8.5 lbs, regardless of model or caliber. Maybe that's spot on... maybe not. I haven't owned one for a while and don't recall the weight...

    A toast to the venerable Remington 700 5R mil-spec

I’m more of a Sendero guy, but the 5R in .300 Win Mag would be pretty compelling.

Thinking about sticking with .308 vs. 6.5, am I crazy?

@fclassparadise - the only problem with the ELD-X for hunting is that it isn't an ELD-M (or a TMK if you're a green tip sort of dude). The ELD-X isn't bad, just a little on the tough side ;-).

Weatherby Mark V 9-lug action source?

@GenericBadGuy - haven't really decided. No rush, no particular need either. An action doesn't take up too much space and I won't feel bad about not shooting it until it's built ;-). I don't currently have a magnum anything... or even a long action, at this point. I was considering something...

Weatherby Mark V 9-lug action source?

I don't own a 1 MOA bolt gun, but if I did it would be for sale. ;-) Really just want the action because it's a cool design. Weatherby did confirm, promptly, that they wouldn't sell anything but a complete rifle and that what I requested wasn't feasible.

Weatherby Mark V 9-lug action source?

I'd love to have a Weatherby Mark V action, but not so much the Mark V rifles they catalog. Is there a decent source out there other than simply buying the least expensive Mark V one can find? Perhaps a smith that stocks them? Amplification/Gripes: 1. Monte Carlo stocks: I hate this design...

Coup De Grâce, New Action from American Rifle Company, $899 WOW!

I saw the discussion on mags (AIAW versus AICS), can I assume no Oberndorf/BDL style bottom metal support?

Coup De Grâce, New Action from American Rifle Company, $899 WOW!

I don't think I can resist. I keep kicking around ideas... was gonna see about sourcing a Mark V donor action, or perhaps a Zeus QC... but... all that ARC goodness at $900? The only question is whether I replace my Nuc with this and get a long action as well, or just the long. I should so...

    18” 30/06

I worked up 195 TMK and 208 ELD-M loads for GP use, I preferenced 150-165 if I was going tougher. Granted my barrel was 24 inches… chasing speed from a shorter tube, I’d probably have opted for the 175 TMK or 178 ELD-M. Bonded 180s just seem like a weird proposition in the -06 to me… not heavy...

    Seekins HAVAK PH2 300PRC

You might need to DIY another hole into the stock. It looks like current PH2 incorporate ambi-flush cups, one where the second sling stud would be up front. A drill and some epoxy (anything you'd use for bedding) would work. Get the ARCA or pic rail of your choice with appropriate hole/mount...

Why isn't straight pull more popular?

I agree with you. I've tried to explain to other firearms owners that everyone of us is an ambassador for the RKBA. The number of gun owners that seem to absolutely revel in being a poor representation of our demographic, simply because they can, is going to cause us some significant problems...

Is it possible to build an AT-X in .224 Valkyrie using a factory action?

I know this doesn't answer your question... but, have you considered the .22 BR? That sort of side steps the issue, seems very comparable performance wise to me. You lose out on factory ammo... but, .224 Valk ammo support is sketchy and much of it seems to be loaded light for use in gas guns...

    Steiner T6Xi vs March FX

I love my March FX 4.5-28x52, I think it's a really good piece of kit. That being said, March has a number of other optics that are arguably MUCH more suited for what you're trying to do. The FX is a "crossover" or hybrid scope that leans heavily towards that field/tactical shooting genre. If...

Why isn't straight pull more popular?

In fairness, if I could get a nice wood stock made to fit me, I'd be in like Flynn. I would dearly love a custom fit stock made from whatever maple tree gave its life for the M70 I once owned. Just gorgeous. Same with the Turkish walnut that was on my CZ 550FS. Give me a reverse...

If you could only own 2 caliber Rifles?

Easy question. ;-) 1. .223 Rem/5.56x45 from an AR-15... and if you're gonna pin me down to only one configuration it's a coin flip between 16" or 18" match grade barrel, mid-length gas, .223 Wylde chamber. Fun at the range, useful for hunting a wide variety of critters. 2. Toss up between...

Why isn't straight pull more popular?

I was going to post the same video. Shooting a full power hunting gun with a traditional turn bolt while rapidly transitioning between targets on a driven hunt... the exact scenario that favors a straight pull... at east theoretically. The reality is that if you lose the difference in cycle...
