Gunsmithing New Chinese lathe or old south bend?

Re: New Chinese lathe or old south bend? To each their own. I prefer the old stuff for my gun hobby. I use a larger Taiwan lathe in my normal machining work. I learned on an old Southbend lathe plus my dad was a watchmaker that loved Southbend pocket watches. So, I like old Southbends. I...

Gunsmithing new equipment, need some tooling

Re: new equipment, need some tooling Must be the wrong scout but I am trying to get started doing some simple stuff. By the way Nick, you should never leave the chuck key in the drill press like that. If it accendently gets turned on, the chuck keys tend to fly accross the room.

Gunsmithing new equipment, need some tooling

Re: new equipment, need some tooling I have gotten quite a bit of stuff from ebay. Some new and some old, but have gotten some good prices. Nice looking shop but looks like you need to clean out the chip pan and start making some chips. A quick change toolpost is a real good place to start. I...

Gunsmithing Lathe chuck backing plate maching trouble

Re: Lathe chuck backing plate maching trouble I agree with 300mag, if it is hardened then ceramic inserts work well. They are about the same price as carbide and will cut hardened material well if you don't have alot of interupted cuts. Just take light cuts at a higher rpm. My supplier said...

    Gunsmithing Rusted Bolts/ Penetrating Oil

Re: Rusted Bolts/ Penetrating Oil Silly question, but why did you heat the barrel instead of heating the receiver. Normally you heat the female threads so that they expand.

    Gunsmithing Rusted Bolts/ Penetrating Oil

Re: Rusted Bolts/ Penetrating Oil I usually use kroil. But I have had some success with "Freeze & Release" from Loctite. I has worked for me on a few occasions when Kroil did not.

    Gunsmithing threading tools

Re: threading tools Indexable carbide is the way to go. A quick change toolpost is also best. The best prices that I have found is from CDCO Machinery Corp. They have some real good prices on several different items.

    Effective Ranges

Re: Effective Ranges I recently purchased a copy of "Applied Ballistics For Long Range Shooting". I am still reading but it has a lot of good information about effective ranges for different size animals and different ranges for particulary bullets. You should get a copy.

Gunsmithing A couple more machinist questions

Re: A couple more machinist questions I have bought several mach. handbooks off ebay. I have several different editions. Anything from the 23rd and up should be fine. I got mine for alot less than retail. RPM depends alot on the machine. I use koolmist or wd-40 for lube and cooling. I use hss...

    NF on 50 bmg

Re: NF on 50 bmg Rutledge, Thanks for the comment. I am hoping it works out for me. I really like the high power. I am hoping to manage the mirage. I have heard many good things about NF. That is the reason I bought this scope.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally...

    NF on 50 bmg

Re: NF on 50 bmg Bullet, I plan to develop better loads. Shooting a 50 bmg is a whole new ball game. I am just having fun right now. Will get more serious as time goes on. Where do you get reloading data? I have not come accros much yet. I have not looked that much yet. But the more info I...

    NF on 50 bmg

Re: NF on 50 bmg I want to be able to use both reticle lines and plus adjusting the turrents. As I mentioned, I want to move out to 1000 yds. But right now about 500 yds is all that I have availible. I will move to a higher quality bullet when I get a little better at shooting this setup. The...

    NF on 50 bmg

Re: NF on 50 bmg ScottyS I appreciate the advice. I will try to remember to maintain a consistant position. As far as the the power of the scope, I had a 20X before and did not like it for 500 yds. So, I went to a stronger power. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div...

    NF on 50 bmg

I just got a NF 12-42 x 56 NXS with a NP-R2 reticle. This is my first Night Force. I got it for my Armalite AR50-A1. I just got it zeroed at 200 yds. I am waiting for it to dry up so I can try it at 500 yds. I am looking for someone who has a similar setup. I hope to eventually move up to 1000...

Rifle Scopes VX-III or Hold Out for NF?

Re: VX-III or Hold Out for NF? I bought a Vari X III to start with. I bought the 6.5 X 20 with a 40mm front lens and side focus. The 30mm tube seemed to help. It was a good scope and never regret having bought it. I just traded it as part of a trade for a NF 12x42. The leupold held it's value...

    Gunsmithing Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal?

Re: Bridgeport Pics Good/Bad deal? If the ways are in good shape, it would be a good deal. Looks like you will need a power feed for the table. Also, a DRO for the quill would be good. I have a DRO like the one on that mill. It is as old as the hills but works ok. I am looking at replacement...
