    There is a difference between lapping and breaking in a barrel. Breaking in is a good thing, but it does not remove tooling marks, only lapping will do that. Breaking in only fills pores with copper. The OP is asking about lapping factory grade barrels, he later referenced custom barrels.

    I hand lap with 320 and 600 lapping compound, I do not use the 220 as I think it removes too much metal. It's actually very simple, just labor intensive. Just get a cleaning swab for the correct bore size, rub the lapping compound all over it and start running it in and out of your barrel...

    Friend of mine broke the seal around the glass on his Leupold, now the S&B is tougher, but I wouldn't risk it on a $3600 scope.

    I could be wrong, but it was my understanding that the Mark AR's are basically the tactical versions of a VX-2. Which if the case, should be a really good scope for the money. I run 3 VX-2's on my hunting rigs and the are good to go! I'd still like to hear more on the Mark AR though...

    Thanks guys, found one for about $400 with cheap BSA scope figured it was decent deal, except it has the ugliest paint job I've ever seen. Not to mention the ugly as hell Hogue over molded stock, was gonna try and make it decent again if I didn't have to get crazy with the $$$.

    So I am looking at picking up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical on the cheap but the barrel and most of the action have been spray painted. Can I strip the paint off with acetone or paint thinner without hurting the black oxide finish, or am I stuck just spraying over it? Thanks

    Ideal length barrel 300 win mag

    Personally, I wouldn't go any lower than 24". You won't get any of the mag velocities under 24", which kind of defeats having a magnum in the first place. According to the case capacity vs barrel length, anything under 26 makes it overbore.

    These guys are shooting you straight. "Polishing the cannonball" could not have been said better. I'm in the same position you are, I have a few 700's I want trued up, but i know in the back of my head 99% of accuracy is the barrel.

    The people that I know that want an original Canjar usually have to to gunbroker and find a rifle that already has one on it. Can be expensive, but if you want the real thing your'e kind of limited to that.
