    "NT" headstamp

Nammo Tactical. I should have thought of that.

    77gr. smk powder recommendation.

My personal load is 25.9 grains of 2000 MR with 77 gr SMK's. I'm shooting it out of my Compass Lake, and it rocks. YRMV. Start low, and work up slow.

    "NT" headstamp

NT is usually used to denote "non-tox" in the states. I don't personally know of a non-tox magnum primer, but I wouldn't doubt it. Probably a Sintox from RUAG. If that's true, there should be no difference in brass manufacture, just the primer.

    Composite stock for an 03-A3

I was wondering about the Winchester idea. Thanks Kona!

    Composite stock for an 03-A3

Call me a cheap bastrd, but...... I'm chambering an 03-A3 right now and I've looked around the trash pile for a donor stock. It seems to me that a 700 LA stock MIGHT be made to fit, with a little ingenuity and some bedding compound. My recollection is that if you place the action recoil lug...

Gunsmithing 03 A3 thread specs and tolerances

Re: 03 A3 thread specs and tolerances Dave- I think I'm with you. I want to torque up against that shoulder, and not have competing forces acting upon that joint, right? 303- I took my max thread diameter down to 1.040", and plunged my roots to 0.990". While the action didn't glide on...

Advanced Marksmanship Keeping the wrists straight.

Re: Keeping the wrists straight. Topstrap, I didn't mean to offend, by any means. Look, we're both in agreement about this thumb thing. You called it a death grip. If those forces are affecting the rifle negatively, they need to amend those forces. While you do it by way of placing a...

Advanced Marksmanship Keeping the wrists straight.

Re: Keeping the wrists straight. My friend- Interesting observations from these teachers (in the books, not on this forum thread), but if that's the way they're teaching, they're missing the point, and they're not conveying the true fundamentals. Firing hand (trigger hand): The LOP and...

Gunsmithing 03 A3 thread specs and tolerances

Re: 03 A3 thread specs and tolerances 303- Thanks on that. I'll mock up another one and see how it fits. Sounds like I'm trying to make everything too tight. Blasphemy, but I'm making a couple of sporters. Actions are trued up, and that was a neat learning experience. Now for chambering...

Gunsmithing 03 A3 thread specs and tolerances

I'm threading a barrel to fit the square thread 03 A3 pattern. Mocked up some SS stock and cut one, just to ensure that I wouldn't bugger up a good barrel. Seems I've got it right, both in the cutter form (true square) and width. I'm running my "max" barrel thread height at 1.045", and my...

    Bad bullet, or something else?

Re: Bad bullet, or something else? Any way to tell if the bullet impacted before or after the target? I know it's hard to figure, but if your projectile had an air bubble or if the bullet flew poorly, very likely that the ballistic coefficient and therefore time of flight degraded too. If...

Strange thing at the range today using IMR4064

Re: Strange thing at the range today using IMR4064 Hodgdon manual lists IMR 4064 with a 168 SMK @ 45.9 grains, 58.8 kpsi. And that's with probably a good 0.050" freebore too. You're running 0.010" jump, and almost another grain. You're warm, if not hot. Here's my advice: If you're going...

Advanced Marksmanship Dealing with mental pressure in a match

Re: Dealing with mental pressure in a match AA- You got it. Make your brain congruent with what you're doing. One other thing I forgot to mention: Sounds corny, but it REALLY is true. "A man's got to know his limitations". Absolutely true for shooting in a match. Perfect example...

Which should i use SD or ES

Re: Which should i use SD or ES Great to see FamilyMan having some fun with all this. Good for you. My only added comment might be for you to take a look at Taguchi Matricies. Sounds overly complicated, but actually quite simple. It's just that there's a bunch of geeks who use it, and...

    Evaluate this ladder please

Re: Evaluate this ladder please Brian- We on the board will not tell you what is safe or not safe. You have to rely upon established norms of reading pressure. Nobody knows exactly your chamber and throat conditions, bore dimensions, primer output, bullet diameter, powder lot, seating depth...

Advanced Marksmanship Dealing with mental pressure in a match

Re: Dealing with mental pressure in a match Listen- It's not a Zen thing. It's not any kind of transformative magic mumbo-jumbo. There's not a short-cut. Want the secret? Here it is: When you're a master shooter, you've engrained the correct fundamentals into your shot process. In...

Gunsmithing Can't keep barrel from spinning in vise

Re: Can't keep barrel from spinning in vise Chuck the barrel up in a lathe with a 4-jaw, and machine off the recoil lug. I had to do this on one particular action I owned. Not heat, nor might was going to take off that particular barrel. To do all over again, I'd have saved a lot of grief...

Range Report Calling 40 Lb. Heads, is there something to this?

Re: Calling 40 Lb. Heads, is there something to this? Google " Greenhill formula", and this will give you some static numbers to understand. While not a perfect model, it is the industry standard for determining appropriate twist rates. The model will explain that twist rate is determined...

Gunsmithing Firing Pin Releases When Bolt Closes

Re: Firing Pin Releases When Bolt Closes I think Jason might be onto something, but who knows. Here's one more tool for the kit: Get a styrofoam cup, a lighter and take the bolt out of the gun. Rip off a big piece of styrofoam, ignite it, and "smoke" the firing pin dumeflature on your...
