Handy little rifles, not really popular these days though. I have 2, one on the left is a 6.5 Mag and the other is a .308. Killed my first deer with the 6.5, accurate little rifle, not a whole lot of fun to shoot though:)
Jon built me two almost identical 7MM-08's several years ago. Both turned out great, his attention to detail is as good as it gets, really a nice guy to deal with. You will be pleased in how your rifle turns out !!
I actually did OK this year in the draws. For my home state of Oregon I drew a mule deer buck tag in a unit I've not hunted but may have access to some private land so it could be good?? Also drew an extra deer tag and a late cow elk tag.
And did Ok for my Wyoming draw, no luck on deer but...
For my all out hunting rifles I try and come in around 7.5 lbs or a bit under. My 2 favorite rifles are right at 7 lbs 4 ozs all up. This one being my most used rifle, built by Karl Feldkamp @ Kampfeld Customs. Its my antelope hammer:)
Congrats on the new rifle, looks like a shooter for sure!! And I'll also say that Jon is 1st class and his builds are as good as they come. He's done 2 rifles for me and I'd sure like another one built by him.
Just went through the the same thing. We had a small chest freezer but with salmon/deer/antelope it wasn't big enough. We ended up getting a nice sized stand-up freezer and it sure is nicer than a chest. Not sure what size we have but it currently has about 10 salmon and about 50-60 packs of...
I have a Brown on my KS .280. Its not the Pound'r stock but its probably the lighest weight stock I have even compared to several other McMillans I have. Its light enough and stiff enough especially for a full on hunting rifle. They are nice but not cheap.
Here is my KS - you can order the...
Looks great! First time I've ever seen one of those barrels, not really familiar with them?? Just checked out their website, looks like they have some interesting options for their barrels and the price seems decent. Have you shot it yet??
My Superlite 7mm-08 sitting in a Hunters Edge & properly bedded seems to shoot extremely well with the screws at around 45 in/lbs. Just picked up a Superlite 6.5 Creedmoor and will likely do the same with that one.
Just picked up a Superlite 6.5 Creedmoor, haven't set it up yet but expect I'll like it just as much as my Superlite 7MM-08 which is crazy accurate. Should be a nice rifle when I'm all set up, plan on dropping it in a Hunters Edge stock and taking it hunting:)
Guess this would qualify as a "classic" hunting rifle. Its the only wood stocked rifle I would hunt with, used to be my dad's go to rifle. Sako Forester in .308.
When you say there is no black in "nature" what does that mean?? Because when I'm out hunting in "nature" I sure seem to see plenty of things that look black??? And really isn't camo more about breaking up a solid object so it doesn't stand out as much??
Here's another vote for the McMillan Hunters Edge/Compact. Especially since you mention its a deer/elk rifle and you want to keep it as lightweight as possible. The Hunters Edge/Superlites make for a really nice overall rifle. This one is a 7MM-08.
Replace it with a new bolt shroud/firing pin assemble from either PTG or my preference is Gre-Tan which IMHO is a much nicer unit over the PTG. If you pull the firing pin on a J-lock you will see why you should replace it, usually the spring looks like a cork screw!!!
