Gunsmithing upper and lower receiver play

You can drill and tap the lower receiver vertically at the rear takedown pin for a nylon tipped setscrew ala POF. That is really only practical for a rifle that won't see field stripping often though and you need a punch or similar to break the rifle down. Think match rifle. The accuwedge is...

Gunsmithing Lathe 1 3/8 spindle bore

My Atrump 1340 rolls with a 1.375 spindle bore and has served well, I was even able to cut and thread a Bushmaster BA-50 through the headstock. Also a fan of the double spider set up but I have a collet closer extension on mine, I just drilled and tapped the extension around the circumference...

    Gunsmithing threading for suppressor

^^^what Killswitch said. I use two indicators on a rod when I am dialing in a barrel. One is right at the muzzle and the other is as far outboard from the muzzle as possible. That way I am positive the threads are not only concentric but axially aligned as well.

Threading a barrel already on action

To a degree, yes. You don't want a brake that has its ports designed for .223 gas impulses. That being said I would feel most any brake designed for the .30 caliber will be fine depending on what you are trying to acheive. I am sure there are some brake gurus here that have forgotten more than I...

Threading a barrel already on action

Whether or not the barrel needs to be pulled is going to depend on the lathe your Smith has and how skilled of a machine operator he is. I can thread barrels as short as 16" through my headstock and shorter barrels I can work over the bed. Its just a matter of workholding and fixturing the...

    Gunsmithing Parkerizing a M40

There are two basic parkerizing processes, zinc phosphate and manganese phosphate. Zinc phosphating (rarely used now)will yield a larger grain, grey hue where the manganese phosphate will yield a finer grained dark charcoal to black color. The greenish hue seen on older firearms is typically...

Re: sand blast Remove all internals as noted above and wash thoroughly with solvent followed by a rinse in laquer thinner. You want to keep your media as grease/oil free as possible. Mask off the ejector as noted. You can damage it by overzealous blasting and you can also kill the temper of...

    Gunsmithing barrel indication

Re: barrel indication You can always spin it between centers as well. Turn a false muzzle with a spud on it that is a snug slip fit into the bore. Make the spud long enough so it goes into the bore 2-3". This will help alignment, even if the bore has a touch of runout. Although not as...

    Gunsmithing D1-4 Spider Chuck

Re: D1-4 Spider Chuck I just made my own. I got a D1-4 backing plate from Lost Creek Machine and turned it down to the spindle OD. Drilled and tapped for 3/8 x 24TPI at 90 degree intervals on the circumference. 3/4" thickness made it plenty stout and by not going with a backplate/spider...
