    Tikka, Howa, Remington, Savage?

If you want the best out of the box long-range precision rifle in .300 Win Mag, just buy a Remington 700 5R in .300 Win Mag. Excellent stock and 5R barrel (for a factory rifle) and they run around $1,200. When you can afford to upgrade, send your rifle off to have the action trued and bedded...

    Which big bore for AR?

I've seen an AR-10 built in 338 RCM. It was a hell of a rifle, combining an excellent cartridge with an excellent platform. But finding an AR-10 expert (not an AR-15 expert) to build one is next to impossible.

    Complete Chassis Reference Guide!pics,prices,links

    1903-A4 Rat Rifle

for what it's worth, (according to QuickLoad) 64 (not 74) grains of reloader 22 with a 168 grain SMK, looks like a perfect load giving you the speeds you quoted before.

That is a death load there. "Guaranteed" to blow up in your face. Well over 100,000 psi chamber pressure. I think maybe a typo?

what calibres are good for short barrels

A general rule of thumb is the less the bottle neck, and the shorter the brass overall, the better the cartridge does in short barrels. Example is a .45 ACP vs .223 WSSM. The .45 shoots fine out of a three or four inch barrel, the WSSM cartridges shoot best out of long, 24 inch barrels. .45...

20" barrel deer, blk bear, elk < 700 yard chambering?

Jim, Because I like re-inventing the wheel, I'd go with a short magnum in a long action. In particular, I'd take the tried and true .350 Remington Magnum and neck it up to .375 caliber (.375-.350 Remington Magnum). This has been done for decades and is known for being a potent hunting...
