    I'm a Savage fan (hate waiting months for gunsmiths) but with a 308 you're going to want all the velocity you can get so I would vote for the Remington. Of course I would also suggest you look at something in a 6.5 Creedmoor because it will be much more effective once you get past 800 yds.

    I've gotten numerous hits on the 6" target at 1000 yds using my Bushnell Elite 3200 10X scope that has no parallax/focus adjustment. For the OP I would recommend either the Bushnell for $200 or the SWFA fixed 10/12X for $300. I have two of the SWFA 12X and I love them.

    I used a Dremel barrel sander, then 150 and 400 grit sandpaper. There's room for 3 playing cards between the barrel and the cap.

    Yes I know you seem to want a variable zoom scope, but for $300 it's hard to beat the SWFA fixed 6/10/12X scopes. Especially for target shooting.

    Barrels are a lot like tires, they're meant to be replaced on a regular basis. Target/match barrels anyway.

    Here in central Florida I couldn't find H4350 for almost a year. I gave up and switched to RL17. However I was able to buy some H4350 from Georgia Arms at the Orlando gun show a couple weekends ago. I plan to use the H4350 for my 260AI once I (re)start load development for it.

    I agree 20X seems like a lot for 100-300yds. I use an SWFA 12X to shoot sub MOA targets out to 1200 yards.

    I tried 4831SC with my 260Rem and 260AI. Neither one achieved the velocity I wanted compared to H4350 or RL17. I've got 7 1/2 lbs of 4831SC I need to find something to do with.
