When seasoning an iron skillet, I prefer shortening (Crisco) or lard. As per the pictures, put a baking sheet, or a piece of tinfoil, under the skillet to catch any grease that might drip off. I also prefer 300 degrees for a longer time. Maybe 3 hours or longer (overnight).
I do have a Mod. 70 left-hand, post 64. It is stainless and 30-06 and $6500 is a little much, even for mine... But, as an aside, it is my understanding that what there are is all there ever will be.
I take an emery board and smooth those toenails after clipping on both the Jack Russell and the GSD puppy. Saves wear and tear on both me and the furniture...
