    Save your pennies and get an nxs 2.5-10x32 or x42. They are just what you've stated you're looking for. Low profile and tough as nails. I use the x32's in mil/mil, but have a x42 on the list.

    High Quality Compass?

    I used to work in the timber industry and spent lots of time navigating by compass with maps/ aerial photographs. I had very good luck with the Suunto's and Silvas's. Never used a Cammenga compass, but I would imagine they are a safe bet as well.

    I have a couple of these and on the older one the illumination knob stops at the point where it turns off the illumination. On the newer one it has two additional settings beyond that, one looks like some sort of half setting and the other appears to be a full setting or something like that...
