    Proof Prefit 6.5 Barrel

I don't blame you. I use to see the Hornady 140gr Match ammo as the gold standard too.......but I have found it to be spotty since Covid. The Proof prefits are cheap for sure and I have seen some shoot really good......but you are definitely increasing yours odds of getting a great barrel with...

    Proof Prefit 6.5 Barrel

I will offer a few things. 1. Confirm EVERYTHING is tight......from muzzlebrake to recoil pad. 2. I strongly suggest shooting a non-Hornady factory match ammo. I have been recommending Federal Gold Medal Match with bergers as a great baseline. 3. If you are shooting this in a chassis of some...

Just want show off how proud I am of my son

If that isn't a reason to de-NFA firearm suppressors, I don't know what is. Ern

    Gunsmithing Proof barrels

Wow this went downhill fast..........I value personal EXPERIENCE more than I do personal opinion........but to each his own. I have answered the original question to the best of my ability.........carry on. I just hope the owner of the barrel in the pics above doesn't shoot hornady eld-m...

    Gunsmithing Proof barrels

Haha. I have called out non-prefits too........even my own work. Don't mistake my knowledge transfer here for "disgruntled competitor shit talking". There have been multiple people in this thread alone that are more than pleased with proof prefits.........cheers to them for finding their...

    Gunsmithing Proof barrels

Went to cerakote a proof prefit this morning for a customer and thought others in this specific conversation will find this interesting. Pic1 - You can see the wicked burr off the trailing edge of the land.......all lands have this burr......not good. Pic2 - Clearly the throat is off-center on...

    Gunsmithing Proof barrels

I will give my experience (and mine alone), at the risk of hurting feelings. Just the facts...... - Every single barrel I have had returned for "not meeting 1/2" guarantee"......has been a proof carbon. Lots of variables but time is money, so replaced barrels and sent back out. Barrels may or...

    Lathe vibration

I run Bison and TMX 6-jaw. I like the light clamping force of a 6-jaw while still gripping enough to take pretty heavy cuts. They work great on thin walled tubing as well with minimal distortion. In my experience, collets are the best but barrels have too much variance unless you do a prep pass...

    Lathe vibration

I recommend getting a good chuck. Even if you balance a chinesium chuck......it will never be consistent. It will also have rough operation and springy jaws. Why polish a turd when you can just spend the money and solve your problem. How do you want to spend your time, chasing your tail on a...

    Tuning idea? Your thoughts?

Yeah I was thinking that mounting an APA slighty slanted may act like a tuner.......coarse adjustments......to achieve that difference in weight (or distance from muzzle). Sounds like it is not enough to notice anyway. Thanks for the input fellas. Ern

    Tuning idea? Your thoughts?

SO I got to thinking.......has anyone used a self-timing brake (like a gen2 little bastard) as a tuner? Or more importantly has anyone had their rifle really dialed in to the gnats ass then removed the brake to clean the crown and reinstalled and accuracy dropped off with the same ammo? This is...

Load Data 6.5 PRC 147 GR bullet and H4831SC

Haha. Yeah.....that has been my experience too. I recently milled a 109 berger and a 108 eldm (that blew up in flight 7 of 10). The hornady's jacket is very thin compared to the berger. The hornadys may not be "bad" but they are way more sensitive to throats/barrels that beat the jacket up for...

Load Data 6.5 PRC 147 GR bullet and H4831SC

In my experience h4831sc is a touch too fast of a burn rate in 26"+ 6.5prc and 147s. I ran into pressure before hitting max velocity/max accuracy. I think h4831sc would be great in 20-22" barrels or 130gr class bullets. Ern

    Feedback on new 700s

The rem700 is still the small block chevy of rifles. Tikka (and others) make good rifles but will never have an aftermarket like the rem700. Hell even most custom actions use rem700 screw spacing. I hope Remington did improve it......it needs to happen to stay alive. Ern

    Texas builder/smith

Thanks for the kind words. To the OP, pick a complete product, DIY parts, or just services from a reputable builder and you will be happy. There are a ton of great builders out there. Keep us posted. Ern

    Impact 737 + 6mm ARC?

I have built a few 6 Arc in Impacts. I have never heard back about any feeding issue. There are quite a few tinkerers out there. The only semi selling point (to me) of 6 Arc bolt gun......is new shooter non-reloading that runs 6 Arc in ARs that wants to bulk purchase same ammo for both? An Arc...
