    For tactical type shooting the LMT MARS MLOC rifle is probably your best choice for a feature rich gun. V1 had them for 1700 before the panic. The New Zealand rifle has a short picatinny rail and dumb features like a bayonet mount theres no reason to pay extra for. For high precision, sorry...

    Hot handloads on a 223 bolt gun are the way to go for secondary. If you don’t have that option you basically need to decide if you want to trade wind for weight.

    No military job will prepare you for an engineering program at a four year school. Being concerned about exposure to new ideas also doesn't automatically mean join the service. My vote is tech school of some sort. Doesn't sounds like service really meets his needs unless it's to secure a gi bill.
