Building a do it all rifle.

Re: Building a do it all rifle. The 280 will have better ballistics with similar weight bullets therefore will actually have greater energy with the same weight bullets at the same range. It's not going to be THAT big of a difference though. The 260 is a fantastic round, your just going to be...

Building a do it all rifle.

Re: Building a do it all rifle. 7 rem mag is going to go around 1500 rounds or so. Otherwise it would be a great choice. If you want good ballistics+barrel life and a cartridge substantial enough to easily take elk sized critters out to 400 ish I'd recommend looking at a 280rem. I have a 280...

    Rifle Scopes nightforce zero question

Re: nightforce zero question I don't know how far you're going to be shooting typically, but if you Zero at 100, then generally everything else is up from there and you won't be dicking around dialing below your zero.

    Rifle Scopes Scope advice wanted...

Re: Scope advice wanted... Since you're going to be using it for hunting I'd go with something with a 3-4 'ish on the lower end. The lower magnification and greater FOV can be helpful in tight hunting situations. If most of your shooting is going to be around 600 there really isn't any need...

Hunting & Fishing Southeast Alaska Moose

Re: Southeast Alaska Moose I hear you when you say you realized you weren't 25 anymore. For me hunting is pretty much always a solitary endeavor and I have done lots of moose by myself. I have a system that minimizes the lifting and I can get a moose quartered and ready to move in an hour...

    Caliber decision.

Re: Caliber decision. I've had a couple 7 mag LR rifles. The only thing I didn't like about them is you tend to piss through barrels. If you don't mind a $5-600 dollar rebarrel every couple years then it's a great choice. Moderate recoil with really good ballistics.

Hunting & Fishing short range kill with long range gun...

Re: short range kill with long range gun... I have two "hunting" rifles that are accurate enough that I practice with them out to 800. However, being a 338wm and a 30-06 I feel they are getting a bit anemic in the 550 to 600 range. Unless you looking for an excuse to shoot farther than that...

Member Link Up Hello Alaska shooters

Re: Hello Alaska shooters It's about 330 miles from my door to downtown Fairbanks. (one way) It's an easy one day trip if the trail is decent. Usually I catch a flight out of the nearest village though.

Rifle Scopes Leupold Prices Seem Much Higher

Re: Leupold Prices Seem Much Higher Leupold made it perfectly clear a while ago that they were far more interested in profits rather than providing a good product. I'd wait for them to reprove themselves before shelling out the money for one. There are others in the same price range that have...

    Hurricane Sandy

Re: Hurricane Sandy Also jonesing for General Tso's chicken right now. I have a good recipe for that just no chicken. I wonder how General Tso's grouse would taste? Might have to go see if I can't hunt me up some yard bird tomorrow.

    Hurricane Sandy

Re: Hurricane Sandy Dude!! You have got to stop with the pizza commentary. You've got me wanting one BAD right now. We just don't have a really good crust recipe for it yet. Nearest Pizza place is 240 air miles away and there aren't really any truly good pizza places in Fairbanks anyway. Good...

    Extreme Cold weather gear, shooting

Re: Extreme Cold weather gear, shooting You definitely need to keep bics warm. One issue I've had with zippo's (and the reason I no longer use them) is that the fuel evaporates very quickly out of them. Not being a smoker I found it would go dry and I would realize it until I needed it. It...

    Extreme Cold weather gear, shooting

Re: Extreme Cold weather gear, shooting I've had very good results with ionbonding as well. If you can spare your rifle for a spell it works really well. Almost like a permanent dry lube.

Re: Hello Alaska shooters It would be fun to meet some of you Fairbanks shooters sometime while I'm in town. Perhaps meet up for a cup of coffee/beer and talk shooting. I get in about once a year in the spring/early summer. I have steel out to 1K at my place, but it certainly isn't...

    Appalachian Trail North Bound Hike

Re: Appalachian Trail North Bound Hike Way to go man!! My family has maintained a section of the AT in Maine for approximately the last 65 years. It's the eight mile stretch from the south end of Nahmakanta Lake north to the crossing on Pollywog Stream. You might remember the view of...

Hunting & Fishing .45 enough for a bear?

Re: .45 enough for a bear? Sounds like a good time. Do you fly into Van Curler's (sp) on the east fork? I've done some stomping around in that neck of the woods although it's been a while. The leaves have started to change a bit out my way and it's been raining like crazy. Must mean moose...

Hunting & Fishing .45 enough for a bear?

Re: .45 enough for a bear? What unit are you headed to? Just curious... I used to pack a .454 Casull for the toothy critters when I didn't feel like lugging a long gun. Now, I just carry a 22" 338wm with irons and 275gr pills when I'm out and about and not hunting. Handguns can be really...
