Looking for a scope to put on a Savage bolt action .308. Haven't decided exactly what gun to get yet, but it will be a heavy barreled gun, to be used hunting some, but mainly for long range target shooting. I would like to be able to get out to 1,000 with it, but most of my shooting will be done around 600.

A few things that are very important to me are, it needs to track consistently. I would like a mil reticle of some sort. Preferably not a mil-dot, I like the lines better since they are a bit easier to figure. It needs to be around $500, no more than about $550.

Here are a few links to the ones I have looked at.....

I am really at a loss to know what to pick, and I know I am not seeing everything that's available.

Re: Scope advice wanted...

Since you're going to be using it for hunting I'd go with something with a 3-4 'ish on the lower end. The lower magnification and greater FOV can be helpful in tight hunting situations. If most of your shooting is going to be around 600 there really isn't any need to go beyond the 10-15 power on the high end. I have NXS 2.5-10's on my hunting rifles and I can go to 1K with the 10 power without any trouble. I prefer my F1, but 10 will get me there fine. When dealing with lower cost optics, I'd make sure to get one with a good warranty. Vortex certainly has that. Other than that I'm afraid I can't be much help since I have not used any of the optics you have listed. Brands like Nikon may not have the best CS unless you go through a dealer who will go to bat for you and get things taken care of. I hope this is of some help. Happy Thanksgiving.

(edit) I will add, that I read a lot of good reviews on the SS optics as well. I don't know anything about their CS though.
