    Gunsmithing Barrel fell

The one I hear about most is someone picking up a barrel in a box/cardboard tube, and the downhill end is open. The majority of my work bench space has cheap carpet floor mats covering the surface. Things don’t roll away (within reason...) and springs, pins, etc have a better chance of staying...

Gunsmithing Lathes for precision rifle building

His budget is $4k. A remanufactured power supply for my turning center was $4k. A guy in his garage doesn’t need a turning center or any CNC lathe to fit barrels. If his budget allows for it, and he can power it, cool, but it’s not needed.

Gunsmithing Unsupported case wall = big Kaboom?

Most cases, this would not be a problem. The BR cases have a much smaller web thickness than most and that needs to be taken into consideration when chambering them, especially when you already have a minimum of .150” unsupported in the counterbore. Edit: in theory, receiver dimensions in hand...

    Gunsmithing 6.5 Creed Shoulder Flattening

If that was a customer supplied blank, no way should the customer have to eat that. Given enough quantity, eventually every builder is going to mess up. Bottom line is if you wreck a customer’s part, you replace the part. I don’t care if you blew up a customer supplied carbide reamer in a...

I’d probably just avoid squeezing it while shooting... It’s fine.

    Gunsmithing the intricacies of threading?

    Thread wires don't scare me.

    Gunsmithing the intricacies of threading?

If the customer supplied brake is out of spec, I absolutely would recommend they send it back for repair/replacement. Why would you make your work out of spec to mate to a single out of spec muzzle device? It only makes sense for the part that is OOS be repaired. Edit: you purchased a bolt from...

    Gunsmithing the intricacies of threading?

You shouldn’t be making bastard threads, unless you are engineering/designing something from scratch for a particular reason. If the boy threads on the barrel are in spec, and the muzzle device won’t fit, the muzzle device is out of spec and needs to be repaired/replaced. Specs are there just...

Gunsmithing Lathes for precision rifle building

These “American companies” are selling Chinese and Taiwanese machines. It’s the same crap. That said, the same crap is just fine for building precision rifles in one’s garage.

From the pictures, it looks fine to me.

Gunsmithing Stuck Muzzlebrake, Any Suggestions on getting a brake off? Is Cold Weld possible??

If it didn't even start to turn, I highly doubt it is galled.

    Gunsmithing Bead blasted Stainless steel

Bead blasted doesn’t mark up/stain too bad. AlOx blasted can certainly hold oils from touching and stain, as well has having the “sharp” ridged of the surface knocked down by being rubbed/bumped, showing irregularities.

Gunsmithing Stupid Question Alert: Can I slide a reamer in a chamber?

Chances are, as long as the new reamer freebore is longer, it’ll work just fine, even by hand. With a proper fit pilot bushing, the alignment will be just fine. The rear of the chamber isn’t going to change and you’ll easily feel the shoulder contact and shouldn’t change headspace. There’s a...

Gunsmithing Collet Chuck lathe and chambering barrel.

Make sure to order 5C collets without the internal work stop threads if plan on through feeding larger than about 15/16” (can’t remember the exact max diameter off the top of my head).

Gunsmithing New to custom R700 actions. Any barrel work?

If it’s the Deviant Elite with the cone breech, chances are, you won’t find a barrel made to fit. It is going to need to have a blank fit and chambered by a smith/rifle builder.

Gunsmithing Need help with threading on lathe (UPDATE)

If something was moving, the thread form would still be correct on both sides, just the angle would be off. A worn leadscrew would have no effect on the thread form. Once the screw catches, the weight/friction of the carriage keeps the screw loaded the same every pass.

Gunsmithing Need help with threading on lathe (UPDATE)

Every time I have seen this, was because people were set up 60* from perpendicular, rather than 30*, due to the way the compound is labeled. It’s the only way I can think of that would cause this.

    Gunsmithing Gunsmithing Lathe

Barrel fitting/chambering is not very demanding. You do not “need” a heavy or even a super accurate lathe to turn out extremely accurate rifles. Rifles built on my 1200 lb Chinese manual lathe were just as accurate as one’s built now on my 6000 lb turning center. I get far better surface...

Gunsmithing Thinking the Smith screwed my barrrel

This day in age, and especially usage typical with this site, threading to a spec makes much more sense than threading to a single muzzle device. Two weeks from now when the next latest and greatest muzzle brake or suppressor hits the market, you're going to be bummed to find it wont fit your...
