Gunsmithing Thought I'd put my mill to good use

I would prefer to not say as the deal I got on it was insanely good. I got it for less than I sold my manual mill for. The mill is nothing fancy but it does what I ask it too with nary a complaint. Hopefully I can get some more work going on it so I can buy a bigger, faster, more better...

    Gunsmithing .30-06 barrel advice (length/twist)

500yds with an '06, anything above 18" would work just fine. If you are looking to hunt with it, 20-22" is ideal as it will keep the weight down some as well as not get caught up in the brush so bad. If you want something stricktly for LR shooting and such, slap a 26" on there so that way...

Gunsmithing Thought I'd put my mill to good use

Took way longer to design and program it. Running it would have been pretty quick but I tend to do 1st time parts pretty slow to make sure everything is kosher. But really they don't take all that long to make.

Gunsmithing Thought I'd put my mill to good use

And made myself (or rather my wife) a 20MOA rail for the Rem 700 I am building up for her. Just got to order up some 7075 to make the rail properly. This was made from some 6061 scraps I had laying around. A few tweaks and it will be a winner. Going to make one for my savage project next...

    Gunsmithing Restricted Savage Parts

Call sharp shooter supply. They will most likely have what you need. They are the goto savage guy(s).

Gunsmithing anyone installed ptg bottom metal?

They won't be out until the the first of the year or later. I tried to get info on the phone a couple weeks ago and they wouldn't-couldn't tell me. My thoughts are that they will probably do both but will do the 4.40" spacing first if they don't do both at the same time.

    Gunsmithing Threaded my bolt

I don't know what scope i am going to go with on this rifle yet so I am unsure of the clearance. But I think the knob is plenty long (around 1.5") and is about 1" at the widest. So it should clear most scope. But I am building this for the wife so its more or less what she likes, even though...

    Gunsmithing Threaded my bolt

Well I got my machine for a song. I got it for a business I have as well as to eventually make some gun stuff with. It was huge gamble as i barely had the money for it and I couldn't view it under power. But really there is no such thing as a "starter" cnc mill IMO. Its a gamble on some of...

    Gunsmithing Threaded my bolt

Yeah this is one of the benefits of having a CNC mill. Just program it set the zero and press a button. Its sweet. After running manual mill for ever a CNC is so nice. Up next is going to be a 20moa rail for the rem and the savage short action I got. Fun stuff.

Gunsmithing Anybody ever modified a Rem 700 SA stock into a LA?

Its not something I would try to do, but if you do One thing I would think about doing is just building an aluminum or steel spacer for the recoil lug. That way you have a nice solid base for it. Would also simplify things some I would think. Just Devcon the piss out of it, bed your action...

    Gunsmithing Threaded my bolt

I hate rem700 bolt knobs from the factory. So I made a jig for the CNC. With a little trial and error got it working as it should. Not bad for the first try. I think I am going to make a jig to do the handles for my savages next as I am too cheap to buy a tac handle. The knob I designed up...

    Gunsmithing powder coating

I have powdercoated some other things, mostly aluminum parts, and I can tell you that I would powder coat only as a last resort on a firearm. I really don't like powder coating. Having done some cerakote work in the past as well, that is the cat's pajamas. If done right, its hard, its thin...

Gunsmithing anyone installed ptg bottom metal?

Staring at some PTG DBM right now. Sadly I don't have a stock to put it in at this point, so I can't help you and the installation side. But it does look pretty easy to do (says the guy with a CNC mill in his shop). Quality wise, I like it. Its well machined, the finish is nice and it has...

Gunsmithing Tikka t3 lite synthetic stock flush cup install

Some plastics just don't play well with most epoxies. I mean, you can always give it a try. If there is enough meat where you are wanting to put the cup, you can go with the thread in kind of flush cups and epoxy them in for the double whammy to hold it. At least the threads might give it a...

    Tikka T3 280AI project

I wish I had the $$ right now to do up a Tikka. Got too many irons in the fire between 2 savage builds and a Rem 700 (on top of refurbing a couple old shotties amongst other things). It sounds on paper that it should be just fine. Just get all the bits for a 270/30-06 mag and get the barrel...

    Humility based request

I am far from an expert, but look at the 260rem and some of the variants if you are just going to just punch paper and steel with it. I have seen some guys shoot past 1k with that. I would spend some nice $$ on glass. As for the action/barrel, there are tons of good options out there. Do a...

    New 280AI build... big problems

While I have no first hand experience with McGowan barrels, from what I have read, they can be iffy on quality sometimes. I could be wrong. Could also be that they designed the reamer/chamber around a lighter, flatter shooting bullet for hunting or something. I am thinking that you may have...

    Accuracy vs Cost, Please Help

IF you are looking for hunting and long range shooting, why not buy 2 rifles? I have had a couple 1903 sporters that have given me 1" or so at 100yds. Plenty enough for most big game to 300-400yds. I never paid over $200 for them. I picked up a rem 700 sporter in 30-06 for $300 that shot...
