Gunsmithing Savage/Stevens Question, having been dense

Re: Savage/Stevens Question, having been dense RUM's on Savages do not "need" to be large shank. They work just fine and within acceptable limits of a standard small shank action. All you need is to swap the barrel if you are starting with a 300win Stevens. The magazine will be too short...

Gunsmithing Question on stiff savage bolt

Re: Question on stiff savage bolt There are many things that can be done to smooth up a Savage. Firing it is the best one. I like the bolt lift kit. I do them to all my rifles. I'll shorten or shim the BAS, not trim the cocking sleeve. I also take my dremel and polish the cocking ramp...

Gunsmithing 338 RUM in Savage 110?

Re: 338 RUM in Savage 110? If you plan on bullets over 225g, you'll have to seat them very deep into the neck. Not as bad as the Edge. The RUM has .090" less length.

Gunsmithing 338 RUM in Savage 110?

Re: 338 RUM in Savage 110? I've done a couple 338 Edges and a ton of WSMs on small shank actions. No problems with the 338RUM. It will be best suited to run it single shot. The magazine is just too short to go repeater.

    Gunsmithing Stevens bolt head swap

Re: Stevens bolt head swap Forgot about the dog-leg baffle. It's real easy to drill out the bolt head for a large firing pin.

    Gunsmithing Stevens bolt head swap

Re: Stevens bolt head swap I know Midway says that, so does Savage's parts finder. But they are different. 204/223 extractor is the odd-ball. All of the standard and magnums use the same extractor. Here's a picture. PM me your address and I'll send you the extractor.

    Gunsmithing Stevens bolt head swap

Re: Stevens bolt head swap That's the correct bolt head, but you'll also need all the small parts to go with it. Extractor, extractor ball, extractor spring, ejector, ejector spring, and ejector pin. You'll also need a new magazine. The 223 has a spacer in it.

    Gunsmithing Savage Axis Rifle

Re: Savage Axis Rifle I wouldn't build on an Axis. The bolt heads don't swap from the 10/110's. There are no aftermarket stocks. You can get a better trigger, but not a really good trigger. Why not start with a Stevens 200? They are completely interchangeable with the 10/110's.

Gunsmithing Tubbs recoil lug on a savage small shank barrel

Re: Tubbs recoil lug on a savage small shank barrel How thick is the lug? If it is too thick you will run out of threads on the barrel before you get it headspaced.
