Is a detachable magazine worth the increase in weight on a precision/hunting rifle?

Nice rifle Boone. Is that a refinished HSP stock? Or a McMillan? What model?

    Best Gore-Tex Jacket ?

This is good advice. I prefer Arc'Teryx products because I like their features, they've proven durable for my uses, they've given me excellent customer service when I've needed it, and they fit me like a glove. It is like they designed the clothes based off my measurements, which keeps me going...

    Good .308 dies

I've used Redding, RCBS, and now Forster. Forster was the keeper.

    Bad primers or something else?

Rifle was built less than a year ago and is never stored cocked. My understanding is that it's pretty rare for a spring to wear out. Oh, well! Just one of those things I guess!

    Bad primers or something else?

Well the 28lbs Wolff Spring arrived and installed with no issues. Checked everything for safety and went to the range. Not a single misfire. I had reloads left over from batches that had misfired and they all went off. Also had a few that I hadn't pulled yet and they also went off. Seems the...

Tikka T3 vs Remington 700 actions

All Tikka's are long actions despite caliber, correct? I prefer having short action's for small calibers. No wasted space.

700 LTR a good choice? upgrades?

LTR is a great rifle if you will leave it alone. If you are going spend money on it, I would upgrade the trigger before a bolt knob. Other than that it is a great little package ready to go. If you are planning to change the stock and what not in the future, buy an SPS and save some money.

    Shorty build.... I got wood.

I assume everyone else, like me, figured it was the one from Numrich that is popular for the M40 repros. There's a stock builder (don't remember the name) that makes beautiful wood stocks with aluminum bedding blocks. Mel over on Sniper Central used one on the SC M40 build. I'd like to try one...

McMillan stock - brittle gelcoat layer?

They will probably fast track the stock for the repair, but I doubt it will be a 'quick' turn around.

    Bad primers or something else?

Deadshot2, you raise good points, but I feel I have closed them as possibilities in my case. I have and religiously use a headspacing tool. I also have a pocket uniformer that I use and it has never been a problem before this current issue. I've hundreds of rounds through the rifle (all...

    Bad primers or something else?

Rereading the thread I realize I haven't given as much information as I thought I had. Probably, due to the delays between shooting and speaking about this issue with different people. Here are few notes: - Every cartridge has had powder. Empty cases is not an issue. - Not a single primer has...

    700 ltr or 10fcp le?????

I've always liked the LTR. Very handy rifle. I don't like Savage actions, triggers, or anything really. Not to say they are not quality rifles that shoot well- they do. I just prefer the way a 700 works and find them more aesthetically pleasing. So I say LTR.

    Bad primers or something else?

Yes, I run it dry. And it has been more than dry the last few trips. I've also put two cans of brake cleaner through it making sure there is nothing impeding the pin along its travel. I hope the spring is the answer, although my smith also agrees that a Remington spring getting weak is rare...

    Bad primers or something else?

I apologize to everyone who has responded and helped me try to problem solve this issue. I have even went out and bought factory...

    Vortex 2.5-10x32 on a custon SPS tactical 223 18"

I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's a great scope for a short light rifle. I guess if you were going to do a lot of really early or late hunting/calling, maybe a bigger objective would offer better viewing. I'm just thinking out loud, my experience hunting in low light is non existent due...
