Advanced Marksmanship The effect of free recoil on POI

Re: The effect of free recoil on POI I am a newbie, so take it or leave it... but I first noticed how free recoil affects my shots when shooting my .308 from a bench. I noticed I could practically hit the same hole at 100 yards when I applied rearward pressure with my firing hand to lock...

    Sloppy training with a .22

Re: Sloppy training with a .22 Good points about recoil. I'll focus on that. Nate

    Sloppy training with a .22

Re: Sloppy training with a .22 This discussion has been good for my marksmanship. Now I hold the .22 firm with my right hand, rearward pressure with smaller 3 digits. I try to get cheek weld and sight picture same as with .308. I am focusing on keeping good trigger squeeze and keeping eyes...

    Sloppy training with a .22

Re: Sloppy training with a .22 Shot at 200 yards yesterday. Humbling. It was fun to see the impacts and adjust.

    Sloppy training with a .22

Re: Sloppy training with a .22 I shoot often out to 125 yards with my .22. I had a duplex reticle, which sucked for this, but recently switched to a mildot for better repeatability of holdovers. I confess I haven't done carfully controlled tests. I notice no difference between free...

    Subsonic Speed and Temperature

Re: Subsonic Speed and Temperature I would think humidity would also affect it. I think density is a part of that, so doesn't humidity affect air density? Nate

    Subsonic Speed and Temperature

I noticed last summer I could fire certain target ammo from my rifle with a suppressor and have a very quiet setup with no sonic crack. I then noticed as the weather got cooler with the same ammo, it started to crack and make lots of noise. I forgot the muzzle velocity 1100-1150 fps? I...

    Sloppy training with a .22

I did a quick search and found nothing on this topic: I fire a .22 for practice. I find that I can hold it firmly, or let it freely recoil and get similar results. With a "real rifle" like my .308, this doesn't work. With my .308 a firm tug rearward with my shooting hand holds the rifle...

Advanced Marksmanship how good are you on wind calls

Re: how good are you on wind calls Best I ever did in wind was 80 yards with a .22...shot a starling from a tree in high wind first shot. Luck? I have tried 300 yards with a .22 - using subsonic ammo. I can hit a 4x8 sheet of plywood. Not much help here from me. I'll know more when I...

    Advanced Marksmanship Cheek Weld

Re: Cheek Weld I had to grind some of my cheek pad away to get closer to the centerline of the rifle to get a good cheek weld on my setup. Of course, I don't know if it is best but it seems to relax my neck more because I don't have to cant my head. Nate

Advanced Marksmanship A simple sling/bipod method

Re: A simple sling/bipod method +1 for Tactical Intervention sling in modified position. I use the cuff in prone but in the manner the author this post uses his sling, near the elbow - not high on the arm. I'm not a pro, but it seems to work well for me to keep the rifle tucked in tight to...

    Advanced Marksmanship 186000 to 8992

Re: 186000 to 8992 In my own defense: You are right, knowledge and practice are more important to good shooting, but new equipment is exciting and fun, especially when it is the first time one has handled a quality shooting instrument. I recently built my first real custom rifle, a...

butler creek caps POS!!!!! any suggestions?

Re: butler creek caps POS!!!!! any suggestions? My new butler creek occular popped open during hunting because I bumped the red lever, then the cap became a frisbee shortly therafter. I bought another objective cover for my occular. It fits fine. I don't need that goofy red lever, anyway...

Rifle Scopes Scope covers breaking on NSX

Re: Scope covers breaking on NSX I'm going to first try an objective cover on my occular before going to bikinis. I like those better, my objective one stays shut better. I am also going to trim the tabs so they don't get bumped and open unless I WANT them open. I broke my occular...

Rifle Scopes Scope covers breaking on NSX

Re: Scope covers breaking on NSX Mine broke in the same location. My rear occular cap flipped up during use because I bumped the red thumb button. I then bumped the open cap and it snapped off. I think I'll try the bikinis or scopecoat. Nate

Advanced Marksmanship Cheek Weld with Bell and Carlson

Re: Cheek Weld with Bell and Carlson Pics of mod are up. I plan to clean up the "precision ground" area with Duracoat at a later date, after I make sure I have everything the way I like it. The coat of polyurethane keeps the prickly exposed fiberglass from poking my delicate facial skin...
