    Gunsmithing PTG barrel fluting cutter

I use an AB tool cutter which is similar to PTG. Mine is 2" diameter and 12 teeth, I run it at 300 RPM and 3" per minute and cut .065" deep in one pass. You need something to support the middle of the barrel. Gary

Gunsmithing barrel flushing system. how much psi?

Other than the addition step of refilling your pressure tank with oil I see no reason why it wouldn't work fine. Oil at 70psi is oil at 70psi regardless of whether it comes from a pump or pressure tank. Done right I think it would be very workable. Gary

Gunsmithing who does NOT use a compound for cutting threads?

I turn the tool upside down run the lathe in reverse and cut away from the shoulder at 255 rpms and cut straight. Higher rpm with inserts seems to give a nicer finish for me. I am not good enough to cut toward the shoulder with any speed. Gary

Gunsmithing Anyone ever built their own action?

Go for it it is a great project. It really isn't that hard, but it does take a lot of planning and thinking before you start cutting. Here are a couple pictures of one I built a while back. I am getting ready to start on a Cheytac action soon. Gary

Gunsmithing Help with LMT Sharpshooter double tap

That can also happen if the spring tension on the disconnector is to light or the disconnector is out of adjustment , however I doubt it is adjustable on a standard trigger so if its not user error I would replace the disconnector spring. If the disconnector happens to be adjustable then go...

    Gunsmithing Stiller Tac408 Barrel Tenon

Thanks I realize that I could call them but I don't own his action and I am not buying one, I am building my own and just wanted the info for a reference as I decide what size I want to make mine. I am not going to call them and take them away from paying work for my benefit. I just thought...

    Gunsmithing Stiller Tac408 Barrel Tenon

Gunsmithing bolt face play, how much is okay?

There are a lot of benchrest shooters who shoot a PPC in a standard 308 bolt face action. The only issue is extraction. If the bolt will reliably pull the case it will be fine. Going the other direction it just needs enough clearance so that it does not bind when closing the bolt. Thanks Gary

    Gunsmithing Bolt handle?

Dan Armstong does a lot of them. He did one for me and it was quick and nice. http://www.accu-tig.com/Order-Price-Sheets/ACCU-TIG%2520Price%2520List%2520%2520FFL.pdf Thanks Gary

Gunsmithing Bolt Lug Clearance for the 700

I generally set my tenon length the same as the bolt face measurement from the front of the recoil lug less the .0015" - .002" that you mentioned. Generally that gives the necessary clearance to operate with out touching and makes makes setting the head space easy as well because you are...

    Gunsmithing Bolt vs. reciever tolerance

You could just bush the bolt you have and serve the same purpose for less money. The PTG bolts are very nice especially if you like the flutes and all but a bushed bolt will be just as accurate. Thanks Gary

    Confirming distance via Google Earth

I live in flat country, but with a 100' tape I could measure 1300 yards pretty quick. I guess that doesn't work if you are shooting across a valley or something.

    Bolt Face Question

Lynn, I replied yesterday but put a link to the bolts and it didn't post. I guess that isn't allowed. Anyway I would be pretty sure they are the exact same bolt you have pictured with out the melonite coating on them. They have a Cheytac bolt face and an M16 extractor. I bought 3 I am...

Here is a link to the page http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/specials2.htm just scroll down toward the bottom. And yest they have the Cheytac bolt face with the M16 extractor...

    Bolt Face Question

Thanks Lynn, It is really only .025" larger per side which doesn't seem like much on a case that big. I ordered some PTG Cheytac bolts and was wondering if they would work for the 338 LM, I think once I get every thing here I will give it a try. Thanks for the help and the pictures! Gary

    Bolt Face Question

In the short range bench rest game a lot of people use a standard .308 bolt face for the smaller PPC cartridge rather than having two bolts. This works very well and pulls and ejects with put problems. I am wondering if anyone is using a Cheytac bolt for the smaller 338LM and if the bolt...
