Gunsmithing When do you gunsmiths add flutes to a barrel blank?

I've done 5 or 6. Some before I thread and chambered, some after. You obviously need to recrown the barrel if it is done after since you have the center from the tail stock shoved into it. I think the threaded and chambered barrels are easier to flute. I use an old lug to protect the tenon...

    Gunsmithing Cerakote coming off

Am I the only one that ever noticed that the table at the end of that video doesn't match the results shown in the video? Look at when ion bond, blue, and park fail in the video and then compare that to the table- they don't match.

Gunsmithing Opinion Wanted On New Grizzly Mill

I had a mill like that and it worked but I upgraded to a used Bridgeport 2J knee mill. Its bigger, but not that much so. If you have room for one of those, you probably have room for a knee mill. The knee mills are easier to you and much more versatile. I used my little mill for 1911 and...

Gunsmithing Badger FTE brake removal and reinstall

You should be able to loosen the pinch screw and unscrew the brake. To reinstall just thread it back on and tighten the screw. It is either timed by the pinch screw or the tenon shoulder, so re timing it should be pretty easy.

    Gunsmithing Cerakoting ring interiors.

Sometimes I coat my rings, sometimes I don't. Personally, if you want them coated I would coat them, and lap them in after they are coated that way you have nothing to worry about.

    Gunsmithing bedding scope base

The theme for all this precision rifle stuff is eliminating stress. So like the last poster said, do the base, then the rings and finally the scope.

Gunsmithing Who laps their barrel tenon threads?

Does anyone here lap in their barrel tenon threads? I've read about a couple guys doing it and saw it in the Gritters/Grizzly video. I never have and was wondering if it was worth a shot.

    Rem 700 6.5-06 Project

I think Bob over at Viper's BenchRest runs a 6.5-06 on all his 1,000 yard rigs. IIRC he told me he runs 1 load and doesn't do load development. I actually bought a 6.5-06 reamer because I was so intrigued by my conversation with him. Maybe drop him a line, he is a cool dude. The Viper He...

    Gunsmithing DRO suggestions

I think a DRO and power draw bar make a mill. They speed up operations tremulously. The power draw bar is fantastic because tool changes are effortless and the DRO makes layout and alignment a piece of cake. They also have line bore, center find and bolt pattern features that make some...

    Gunsmithing DRO suggestions

I have a Grizzly on the lathe and a dropros on my mill. They are the same easson (spelling) unit. The grizzly has slightly larger scales. The dropros was cheaper and they had way more sizes available.
