Gunsmithing Milling Savage Bolt for Better Primary Extraction

Well, that's scary... Spun up a Bartlein for my son's .338 LM while he was visiting last week, working up loads yesterday it was a tack driver- one group in the 1s, and several others in the 2s and 3s. Need to improve that primary extraction though. Shims would probably be the better way to go...

Gunsmithing Milling Savage Bolt for Better Primary Extraction

Haven't modified a Savage bolt before- I've got .029 gap between the baffle and rear of the bolt. Can I mill all that off the back of the bolt body (and the big ass bolt) without it fucking with the closing ramp, or do I need to leave maybe ten thou clearance?

Load for .338 LM, Berger 300 Hybrids and N570?

Just spun up a new Bartlein (30 in) .338 LM with my son while he's home for the holiday and gonna do some load workup. We'd been using N565 with 300's to date (300 A-Tips) in the old barrel, he has Berger 300 Hybrids and N570 which I hadn't been able to find previously (had been using H1000 and...

muzzle brake for a 300 nm

Did you mess around with the gas port adjustments? Don't own one, but the adjustable gas system presumably can help with return to sight picture.

Anybody seen a gun wrap in person?

Here's the thing... You've already got corrosion. Put anything over it- before removing it completely by blasting or sanding, you're not solving the problem, and would make it worse by covering with a wrap because it would progress underneath where you won't see it (until you remove the wrap and...

    Bedding

I tend to agree with this since you're a beginner. Epoxying the pillars in place first (make SURE they're the correct length for your action/configuration) makes it a no-brainer as the barreled action will have it's elevation "set" by the pillars- all you need to do is relieve the wood all the...

Gunsmithing Custom Build a Precision Rifle

On what, specifically? I can't tell if you're looking for validation, or suggestions. After all, this is a precision rifle forum- most here, have built or had others build custom rifles for them. What answers, or advice- are you seeking?

    Hornady Comparator Readings

In addition, be sure that the casehead is firmly seated/square to the caliper jaw. Also, cheap calipers are often not repeatable ( no idea whether yours are, just sayin'). Does it return to 0.000 every time you close the jaws? Measure a suitable object multiple times, and see if you get the...

    Gunsmithing Crown Damage

^^^ Damn, no shit...didn't even look at the photos. No borescope needed for that, huh?

    Gunsmithing Crown Damage

This. That minuscule scratch across the crown is now way going to affect the flow of gas across the crown to deflect the bullet. Check the edge of the bore with a Q-tip to be sure it doesn't grab any fibers. I always put a very small 60 degree counterbore at the edge of the crown after cutting...

    7prc headspace issue!

As I've always understood it, internal ballistics are: Firing pin pushes the case forward- it'll seat on the shoulder, belt or rim depending on the design Once the clearance is removed, the primer detonates and the case blows out to form to the chamber. Case is held in place by 60 some thou of...

    7prc headspace issue!

The numbers are right on the SAAMI print... Datum length is 1.90- 1.910 max. No go, and field dimensions are subjective and can/do vary by gage manufacturer. It is also true that comparator bushings are often not precise (hence, "COMPARATOR")- but if you have telescoping gages on inside mike you...

Can a lead sled reflect the accuracy of my rifle and load?

How many rounds? What's the cleaning/copper removal regimen you use? As mentioned, check the usual shit- though with loose action or scope mounts you'd see more than 1/4". I don't think it's you, inconsistent shooters shoot inconsistent groups.

375 Cheytac rifles today? Or something else.

"Kick like a mule" is mitigated with a heavy stick and an effective brake... The .300 WM is definitely capable at 1K. Question is, what exactly is "1K+"? Mile? 2K? longer? I see no reason to go "exotic" at a mile or less unless it's "because I can" and $$ is no object. The .338 LM and .300 NM...

Who here has a custom Tikka action?

Of course you're removing threading- you would need a relief cut at the end of the receiver for that not to be the case. Been a while since I did one so I don't remember the amount faced to remove that chamfer but I think it's inconsequential. IIRC you still end up with a tenon of approx the...

    Inconsistent POI.

I retract my prior statement after taking a better look at the targets :) I agree. Group sizes aren't substantially different, something "loose" is usually inconsistent scattergun groups.
