I have an older model lmt with a quad rail. It's super heavy but runs flawlessly. I think newer models are lighter though. I prefer piston carbines for the reasons stated above.

500-700 yards? You can do that with a 5.56. I have a 20" Falkor Petra .300 wm that hits out to 1200 yards with no issues. You could easily go down to 16" if you wanted.

Welcome from the burbs of Chiraq. Be glad you're down state. Honestly the government here is terrible but if you don't live directly in Chicago or Springfield, the people aren't that bad. But this isn't a great state for shooting long range. There's no real options unless you have private land.
