Gunsmithing Semi-auto .308 checking headspace methods?

Careful using brass as a method to check headspace. I wouldn't do it at all, not that it will hurt anything but it just won't give you any positive results. Check out the drawing here: http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Rifle/308%20Winchester.pdf A conforming (to SAAMI specs) piece...

Gunsmithing Semi-auto .308 checking headspace methods?

Sounds like you might be on the ragged edge, but doesn't necessarily mean you are unsafe. If you ever get the chance to try another gage set it would probably be good to do so, even if it's the same brand. Even though they are gages there are still tolerances in them. I've seen headspace...

Gunsmithing Semi-auto .308 checking headspace methods?

Hmm, if I were you I'd try the method I described above using only the upper half. If your gages are good and if you can't push it in with moderate to heavy thumb pressure (without leaning on it!) then I'd say you do not have a "GO" condition and your headspace is too tight. Do you have access...

Gunsmithing Semi-auto .308 checking headspace methods?

When you say "disassemble the bolt" do you mean just pull the bolt from the carrier or are you taking the ejector out too? The ejector needs to be out if you are checking the headspace with the bolt out of the upper half. The easiest way to check it that gives good results and won't damage...

Rifle Scopes The truth about Leupold thread

I have only one Leupold scope but have no complaints with it. It's a VX-3 that I have on a hunting rifle with a 200 yard zero so I don't track and return to zero much at all, but the overall quality is more than satisfactory and I feel the price was fair (don't remember what I paid for it a...

Bolt sticking with Federal Brass, but not with Winchester. Why??

I'm not sure about 300 WM, but Winchester brass generally has higher case capacity than most others. I've found this to be true in 308 and 223 at least.

Bolt sticking with Federal Brass, but not with Winchester. Why??

Case capacity can vary a lot from headstamp to headstamp. I learned this the hard way a couple years ago when I put what I thought was a safe charge into a different brand of brass keeping all else equal. Ended up with 200 rounds of high pressure 223 Rem! Whoops. I was blowing primers every...

    Suppressors Hunting with the 44

Re: Hunting with the 44 The 240 XTPs go through deer pretty well. I expected bigger exit holes, though. I'm running about 1700 fps out of a Henry using H110. Could push it faster but haven't found a need to yet.

    best bullet

Re: best bullet MitchAIsup, do you have a higher resolution image of that? It looks interesting but when I blow it up large enough to see, everything is blurry.

    best bullet

Re: best bullet It really depends on what you're hunting and your definition of "best". Best value or best performance? Whitetail, any of the above mentioned bullets will work, but a Barnes TTSX wouldn't be the best value for Varmint hunting. I've found a 150 or 165 ballistic tip (any...

.223 load data for 75 gr. HPBT using Reloader-15

Re: .223 load data for 75 gr. HPBT using Reloader-15 You're welcome. You'll have to flip a couple of pages after the "223 Remington" to get to the "5.56 X 45mm NATO" data, as they don't list the 75 grain bullets on the 223 Remington section.

.223 load data for 75 gr. HPBT using Reloader-15

    Re: .223 load data for 75 gr. HPBT using Reloader-15 What Hornady manual do you have? The 6th edition shows: RL-15 2200- 20.0 2300- 20.8 2400- 21.7 2500- 22.5 2600- 23.3 2700- 24.1

    cleaning cases

Re: cleaning cases If I just have 20 or so to load up I typically just brush out the necks, pour some rubbing alcohol onto a rag or paper towel and wipe down the outsides. Seems to work for me and it beats firing up the tumbler for such a small number of cases.

    One Shot or Case Slick?

Re: One Shot or Case Slick? I use the same method as okiefired. I put about 10 cases in a loading block and spray down, getting the inside of the mouth while I'm at it. I'll lay them to the side and wait a minute while I size another batch of 10. I just kind of keep the rotation going...

    SST vs. Interbond

Re: SST vs. Interbond Thanks for the posts. Like I said, I use the SST in my 308, but I'm going to be using my 30-06 for an elk hunt in October. I don't have a load worked up yet so I want to work on an SST load and then change over to the Interbond before I head that way (don't worry, I'll...

    primers everywhere!!

Re: primers everywhere!! I've started to see more powder and primers in the local sporting goods stores lately. Hopefully it's a sign that this drought is coming to an end.

    SST vs. Interbond

Has anyone tested accuracy differences when switching an SST load with the Interbond of the same weight, (keeping everything equal except the bullet)? I'm interested in using the Interbond for hunting and I currently use the 180gr .308 SST.

To Seal or not to seal primers ?

Re: To Seal or not to seal primers ? Are there adverse effects on accuracy when sealing the bullet? Or are there any complications with cleaning, etc., when nail polish is burned in the chamber?
