.308 tumbling at (almost) a mile.

In answer to your question... yes I was at 1760 yards. Now, if we are done with our pissing contest about the actual distance, and that you CAN hit a target, at a mile with a 308... maybe we can talk about what is actually happening to the bullet... To the point... if the transition period of...

.308 tumbling at (almost) a mile.

Got it. Yes, I am...it's called my hypothesis. I'm testing what I know, and verbalizing it to see if its true. I'm open to the possibility that I am completely wrong. If you have the answer, instead of playing word games why don't you point me in the right direction.

Your point? I must be missing whatever it is your trying to imply... just come out and say it.

.308 tumbling at (almost) a mile.

At 1680 and 1760 you are way out of the transonic area of flight for the bullet with a 308... as I understand it. Transonic definition: Severe instability can occur at transonic speeds. Shock waves move through the air at the speed of sound. When an object such as an aircraft also moves at...

Mile match and attempt at 2640yds...

Thanks! and your right a Spotter is a must! I had 4, couple on glass spotting the misses, and a couple on the camera system watching and listening for misses and hits. At one point, I ended up aiming at the flag, and when I shot, they spotters on the TV system said they didn't hear the miss...

.308 tumbling at (almost) a mile.

Not sure if they are tumbling, per se, but wobbling and and not stabilized as they they come thru the sound barrier... if they are not going straight and they may hit point first but not being stabilized just fold over sideways when they hit... again, I'm not sure how to verify this, I don't...

Long range target camera system setup

No... they do not, not enough power and you are operating in a public band at those frequency's. However, having a Ham license does give you a better understanding of what to do and buy. :-) I have a General. '73 W1CDP

.308 tumbling at (almost) a mile.

Have not put my bullets on paper at a mile, but my hits on steel with my 308 at a mile, have been like the photo your friend sent you. Not hitting the plate sideways. Depending on what your are shooting, you may be in the transonic transition at around 1500 and the bullet is not stabilized...

Mile match and attempt at 2640yds...

Yup, NG is doing well... I've only shot the 300 bergers as those were what was recommended by the rest of the guys at the range... they have found them to be better than the SMK's, and the 300gr OTM's are coming back on the shelf, so I haven't bothered to try anything else... when what you have...

Long range target camera system setup

We started up a quarterly mile shoot here at our range a few years ago, and quickly determined that a normal spotting scope setup was not working well. Spotting misses was ok, but hits on the plate, and misses that were in the shadow's of the target were not possible to see. So I built a target...

Mile match and attempt at 2640yds...

Ventured out for the now 3rd Annual Parma Mile shoot. Driving in it was looking a little sketchy, the fog was hanging low and visibility was 100 to 200yds, the dew point was the same as the temp so the it was hanging in there, but once the sun came up it burned mostly off... kinda of, as we were...

308 win for 1 mile shot

There is no load data for what I'm doing. At leat published that I am aware of. Reloader 17 was what was posted here at one point to try, so I did. I think I'm at 46.5gr. You pretty much have to use Winchester brass, the lapua doesn't have enough case capacity. This is a compressed load, and...

308 win for 1 mile shot

I use the 208 Hornady BTHP (not Amax) Winchester cases and RL-17 with just over 45gr, can't remember off the top of my head. I'm pushing that at 2650 out of a 24" Savage. Over the last 2 years, out our quarterly mile shoot here in Idaho, I can hit the mile gong regularly. I haven't cold bore...

I'm using the loads that came with the rifle right now, and I think I'll stick with them. 92.5 H1000 300gr Berger OTM Remington Brass Fed 215M Primer They are coming out around 2890, at least according to the trued data for 2k. One of the guys we were shooting with marked the GPS of what we...

Taking it to the Edge... 2000 yds and an attempt at 2500

Got up really, really early this morning... 530am... Made the trek out to see a friend and borrow a scope and mount it up for shooting some ELR today. Got to play with a Preimer Heritage 5-25 Scope with a Gen 2XR reticle. (Nice scope, not a big fan of how you slip the knobs...not clear when you...

    Range Report 308 Win, 208 AMax, RL17

Re: 308 Win, 208 AMax, RL17 Last week I had the chance to do a mile shoot, the only thing I have available to me is a 308, so I figured I would give it a try. This thread was perfect. After reading thru this, I went and got some Hornady 208 BTHP, couldn't find any Amax so I just went with...
