    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion Here it is, at long last. 6.5x.284 Norma, 26" Shilen 8 twist ratchet rifled 4 groove, B&C medalist stock, and that's a Burris 2.5 to 10x42mm 30mm tube on it for now. I still have a paint job to do on the stock, but I'll do it after the barrel break-in.

    Anyone tried 130gr Scirocco 2 in a 6.5x.284 norma?

Has anyone loaded the 130gr .264 Scirocco 2 in the 6.5x.284 norma? I'm thinking of trying it, and would like to hear some opinions. I have a 26" 1-8 ratcheted rifled Shilen on a short action Savage. I need to keep my COL @ 2.9 or less, to be able to fit them in the magazine. Is the...

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion Hey, what's your DPMS there? I've been thinking about one in 6.5 Creedmoor.

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Re: Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications That's a good BC for a speer. I agree, if it ain't broke don't fix it. It sounds like it's working good for you. The 105gr Berger is worth a look tho', .532 BC. If you are thinking about a .338, you should look into the .338 RUM. Basically...

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Re: Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications Well, I have personally shot prairie dogs @ 800 yards with the 70 gr Nosler BT. But for groundhogs @ 1000 or 1200, I'd go with the 95 gr's. Hell, I'd probably step up to a 6.5 or 7mm.

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion I've decided on a stock. I ordered a Bell & Carlson Medalist tactical. I like it, I think it's going to be a good one. I must also give props to Midway. I ordered it on a Wednesday and had in my hands Friday.

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Re: Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications Well oddly enough I just made this same choice. 6.5 CM & 6.5-284 are both fine cartridges, IMO the best choices in 6.5 for a short action. Now some will say that the 6.5-284 is better suited for a long action, but the case was designed for a...

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Re: Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications Well, the 308 sort of started the trend. But compared to any of the short mags, the PPC's the BR's, it's not that short and fat. Compared to the 30-06 it replaced, it is.

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Re: Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications The short case places the powder charge closer to the primer. The proximity of the powder to the primer promotes a faster and more uniform ignition. IMO this contributes to accuracy.

Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications

Re: Caliber Choices - Comparison and Applications Very helpful. Would this be the correct place to ask an opinion? 340 Weatherby vs 338 RUM... I think the RUM is a better choice due to the shorter case, allowing more room in the magazine for the longer heavier bullets these cartridges...

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion Well, I guess you could say that. But, as I stated, I have another 12 series to play with. My idea for this rifle is a dedicated long range tack driver. For that, precision & strength are key. IMO getting rid of the nut gives me a beefier chamber section...

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion To be honest the barrel nut didn't bother me in the least, but the gunsmith talked me into it. I have another 12 series in 243 win. that will be staying in stock condition. I'll keep my 22-250 barrel and swap it back and forth if I want. I haven't decided...

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion Just thought i'd drop an update, if anyone cares. My Savage is at the gunsmith. I went with a 6.5-284, in a Shilen 4 groove 1-8. However I decided to have a gunsmith re-barrel the gun for me. I'm not using one of the Savage drop in's, I'm having the barrel...

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Re: Savage 12 varmint conversion Thanks guys. That is some great information, a lot of stuff I didn't know about. I have considered all the 6.5s you mentioned, but I thought 6.5-284 had the best track record. However, now that I know I have a dbm option, I'm wondering how the 284s case...

    Savage 12 varmint conversion

Hey; I'm new to "the hide", and I've got something I'd like you guys to help me with. I've got a Savage Model 12FVSS 22-250, that has been setting around for five years doing nothing. My plan is to make a sniper rifle out of it. I've been out of the tactical business for five or six years and...
