    Gunsmithing Preference on cleaning patches

Re: Preference on cleaning patches These triangle shaped patches are the best Ive ever used. The guy who makes them sold them out of the gun shop I was working at. He always gave me bags to use on customers guns. Now Im on an overseas contract doing small arms repair for the Army and he...

    Gunsmithing Welding on Bolt

Re: Welding on Bolt What kind of bolt knob are you using that is directly welded on to the handle? Im not sure Ive ever seen one. You shouldn't have to worry about the heat treatment at the end of the bolt. Heat treatment of firearms is important in areas where pressure happens. The only...

Gunsmithing Benefits of a ptg bolt

Re: Benefits of a ptg bolt I have installed PT&G bolts in the last 4 rifles I built. The main benefit I see is being able to order the bolt body in and OD you want. I have been using their raceway reamer which opens up the action to .705. Then I order a bolt in .703. The end result is a...

    Gunsmithing Polishing a chamber

Re: Polishing a chamber Unless something happens during chanbering that causes large scratches or worse, I wouldnt worry about polishing. In fact, too smooth of a chamber can cause problems as the brass needs something to grab a hold of when the round fires.

Gunsmithing Any how to's for polishing feed ramps?

Re: Any how to's for polishing feed ramps? Cratex wheels work great! Start with the course to remove the machine marks then use the finer grit wheels to polish as you see fit. They do make somewhat of a mess as the wheel breaks down so make sure you flush everything out once you are done...

    Gunsmithing Pad or No Pad??

Re: Pad or No Pad?? How far people bed in front of the lug is always a debate. Ive always done about and inch in front but I know there are gunsmiths who will bed as far as 3 inches ahead of the lug. There are a hundred reasons why the rifle isn't shooting as well as you think it should but...

Gunsmithing Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15. What about cutting a coil or two off of the ejector spring? Ive never done it on an AR style rifle but its a common practice with older military rifles like the garand. The made them that way because when you are in a foxhole the best place for the...

    Gunsmithing Blue Wonder

Re: Blue Wonder Sorry to hear that 20 of your guns are damaged. I am not a fan of cold bluing and entire gun. I think cold blue is for touching up small areas or scratches and in that case I agree that brownells OXPHO blue is the best. Hot bluing give a durable and usually even finish that...

    Gunsmithing 458 Socom Pistol

Re: 458 Socom Pistol I believe that if you take an action that was once used for a rifle and turn it into a pistol an approval letter from the ATF is required. When I was going through gunsmithing school a guy wanted to build a mauser pistol and he got the approval letter. I remember it...

On hunting trip having trigger problems...

Re: On hunting trip having trigger problems... Chances are its going to be pretty close to your zero IMO. I think your level of concern really depends on what your hunting and at what range. If your planning on shooting at something large at closer ranges than I wouldn't think you need to...

    Gunsmithing Brownell's is unbelieveable !!

Re: Brownell's is unbelieveable !! I'm with everyone on this one. Our shop does most of our orders through brownells and we never have a problem. I was at Brownells a few years ago for the gunsmith job fair and the people who worked there including the owner were all great people.

Re: gunsmithing school any one ? I went to school there a couple years ago. I was actually there when that video was being taped by the newspaper and you can get a quick glimpse of me if you don't blink! Anyway, I think they have a great program there. I went through the school right after...

Re: new trigger for rem 700 .308 Ive installed and set a few of the Timmney Tactical triggers and I really think they are great. They can be seat as low as 10 oz or even lower but they can also be set to an upwards of 3lb or so. Get that trigger set at around 2.5 lbs and you'll love it for...

    Gunsmithing Removing a stubborn barrel

Re: Removing a stubborn barrel I'm new here on the Hide, but not new to removing barrels. I have never seen any damage caused to the threads during the process of removing a barrel. I feel that the barrel will slip in the vice way before any damage can be done to the threads. If the barrel...
